It was scientifically described in 2023 from a significant set of fossil remains discovered at the Sant Antoni de la Vespa site, near the town of Morella. Its name combines "Garumba," a reference to a fantastic creature from local Morellan tradition, with the Greek term titan, while the epithet morellensis refers to Morella, the region where its remains were found.

Garumbatitan represents one of the most important sauropods discovered in Europe in recent decades and constitutes one of the most complete sauropod skeletons found in the European Early Cretaceous. Its discovery has provided crucial information about the early evolution of titanosauriforms, a group that would later give rise to the gigantic titanosaurs that would dominate terrestrial ecosystems during the rest of the Cretaceous.

In terms of size, Garumbatitan was a very large animal. Current estimates suggest an approximate length of 18 to 22 meters, with a weight likely ranging between 15 and 25 tons, depending on the age and development of the individual represented by the fossil remains. Although it did not reach the extreme dimensions of some gigantic Late Cretaceous titanosaurs, it was one of the largest herbivores in its ecosystem.

Its anatomy shows a combination of primitive and derived features. It had a long, muscular neck composed of numerous pneumatic cervical vertebrae, lightened by cavities connected to air sacs similar to those of modern birds. The torso was voluminous, supported by robust and relatively straight limbs. The front legs were slightly longer than the hind legs, providing a somewhat backward-sloping body posture, though less pronounced than in more derived forms like Brachiosaurus.

One of the most interesting aspects of Garumbatitan morellensis is the morphology of its limbs and feet. The preserved remains indicate a very robust structure capable of supporting large body masses. The metacarpals were organized in a semi-circular arrangement typical of titanosauriforms, forming a true support column for the animal's weight. The hind limbs show adaptations consistent with efficient locomotion for a large herbivore, capable of traveling long distances in search of food.

The dorsal and caudal vertebrae indicate that it possessed a long, muscular tail that acted as a counterbalance for the neck. While not as extreme as that of diplodocids, this tail would have significantly contributed to the animal's balance and stability during movement.

As an herbivore, Garumbatitan likely fed on a wide variety of vegetation. During the Barremian, the Morella region had a warm and humid climate with extensive riverine plains, coniferous forests, tree ferns, bennettitales, and other gymnosperms. Thanks to its long neck, it could access different levels of vegetation, from shrubs and low-lying plants to branches several meters high.

The paleoenvironment where it lived was very different from the current landscape of inland Castellón. The region was part of an extensive coastal plain crossed by river systems and marshy areas. These ecosystems supported a diverse fauna that included other sauropods, iguanodontids, small ornithopods, predatory theropods, crocodylomorphs, turtles, and abundant freshwater fish.

The remains of Garumbatitan were found associated with numerous skeletal elements belonging to the same individual, including vertebrae, ribs, elements of the shoulder girdle, pelvis, and limbs. This high degree of preservation has allowed for much more precise anatomical reconstructions than those available for many other European sauropods of the same period.

From an evolutionary point of view, Garumbatitan morellensis occupies a very relevant position near the base of advanced Titanosauriformes. Its anatomy helps to understand how the early forms that would eventually give rise to titanosaurs, the dominant sauropod group during much of the Cretaceous, evolved. Furthermore, it reinforces the importance of the Iberian Peninsula as one of the main centers of sauropod diversification during the Early Cretaceous.

Currently, Garumbatitan morellensis is considered one of the most important dinosaurs discovered in Spain and one of the best-known European sauropods from its time interval, constituting a fundamental reference for the study of the early evolution of large titanosauriform sauropods.

Approximate measurements of Garumbatitan:

Full Scale 1:100

Length 190 mm

Height 95 mm

Width 105 mm

Snout-to-tail length 250 mm

Assembly Kit Scale 1:35

Length 335 mm

Height 165 mm

Width 181 mm

Snout-to-tail length 445 mm

Painted replicas at 1:35 scale will be shipped in custom-made wooden boxes for greater protection during shipping.
