sarcosuchus-imperator-5
Sarcosuchus imperator

Sarcosuchus imperator was one of the largest known crocodyliformes of the Early Cretaceous, a semi-aquatic predator of exceptional size that inhabited the river systems of North Africa, especially in deposits of the El Rhaz Formation in Niger, during the Aptian-Albian stages, approximately 112 million years ago. Although often compared to modern crocodiles due to its general appearance, Sarcosuchus did not belong to the group of modern crocodiles, but was a basal neosuchian related to longirostrine forms such as pholidosaurs. Paleontological studies conducted on skulls and partial skeletons indicate that adult specimens could reach between 11 and 12 meters in length and weigh close to 8 tons, making it one of the largest predators in the Cretaceous African riverine ecosystems.

Its anatomy is characterized by a very elongated skull, with a snout accounting for approximately three-quarters of the cranial length, although wider and more robust than that of strictly piscivorous forms like modern gharials. One of its most distinctive features is the large bulbous expansion around the external nasal opening, known as the narial bulla, a highly developed structure in adults. The jaws were armed with conical, robust teeth with smooth crowns, not interdigitating as in many modern crocodiles specialized in catching fish. This combination of a long but powerful snout, thick teeth, and large jaw suggests a generalist diet, capable of including large fish and other vertebrates, probably also dinosaurs that approached the riverbanks.

The body of Sarcosuchus imperator would have been protected by an extensive dermal armor made of osteoderms, bony plates that covered the cervical and dorsal regions and part of the tail, providing a heavy, powerful, and heavily armored silhouette. Growth studies based on these plates indicate that its enormous size was not due to particularly rapid growth, but to prolonged growth over several decades, with an estimated lifespan of between 50 and 60 years. This replica represents Sarcosuchus imperator as a fluvial giant with a massive anatomy, elongated snout, and distinctive skull, rigorously recreating one of the most impressive crocodyliformes in the African fossil record.

Approximate measurements of Sarcosuchus:

1:35 Full Scale

Length 333 mm

Height 61 mm

Width 80 mm

Snout-to-tail length 340 mm

1:20 Two-piece assembly kit

Length 565 mm

Height 107 mm

Width 140 mm

Snout-to-tail length 595 mm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0672/1106/7660/files/2_cb9bf6d2-bde4-41c9-9bf7-e04ad2a4fa10.png?v=1783254467
