It lived approximately 68–66 million years ago in the final continental ecosystems of Laramidia, shortly before the Cretaceous–Palaeogene extinction event. Originally described by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1891, this taxon belongs to Ceratopsidae, the group of herbivorous dinosaurs characterised by a rostral beak, dental batteries, horns and highly developed cranial frills.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTorosaurus latus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e was long regarded as a ceratopsid distinct from \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTriceratops\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, although in recent decades it has been debated whether it might instead represent a very mature adult growth stage of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTriceratops\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. This synonymy hypothesis was supported by some authors on the basis of ontogenetic changes in the skull, particularly in the parietal frill, whereas other studies have argued that \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTorosaurus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e retains enough distinctive features to be treated as a valid taxon. Research by Longrich and Field, together with later morphometric analyses, has argued that \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTorosaurus latus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e differs from \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTriceratops\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e in its combination of cranial characters, age distribution and frill morphology. A rigorous reconstruction may therefore treat it as a valid chasmosaurine, closely related to \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTriceratops\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e but anatomically distinct.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFrom a morphometric perspective, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTorosaurus latus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e was a very large ceratopsid, broadly comparable in overall length and mass to other giant Maastrichtian chasmosaurines. Adults may have reached approximately 7–8 metres in body length, with a hip height of around 2–2.5 metres and an estimated mass of several tonnes, probably within an approximate range of 5–8 tonnes depending on the individual and the reconstruction used. Its body would have been quadrupedal, low-slung and robust, with powerful limbs, a broad torso, a relatively short tail and a proportionally enormous head. The most impressive feature of the species was its skull, which in \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTorosaurus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e could exceed 2 metres in length because of the extreme development of the parietal frill.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe skull of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTorosaurus latus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e was distinguished by its long, broad frill containing large parietal fenestrae, bony openings that reduced the weight of the structure without diminishing its imposing visual effect. This condition contrasts with the shorter and solid frill of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTriceratops\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and gave \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTorosaurus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e a particularly elongated and elegant cranial silhouette. It possessed two large supraorbital horns above the eyes, a shorter nasal horn, an anterior keratinous beak and jaws equipped with complex dental batteries. The shape of the frill, the arrangement of its marginal epiossifications and the overall architecture of the skull were probably important in individual recognition, visual display, intraspecific competition and possibly defence against large predators.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLike other ceratopsids, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTorosaurus latus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e was a terrestrial herbivore specialised for processing tough vegetation. Its rostral beak would have been used to crop branches, shoots and low- to medium-height plants, while its dental batteries processed food through a continuous tooth-replacement system. The jaw and neck musculature must have been exceptionally powerful to support such a large head, especially in an animal with such an extensively developed frill. Its anatomy indicates a very large herbivore capable of exploiting abundant plant resources in the river plains and open woodland environments of the latest Cretaceous.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTorosaurus latus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e inhabited rich and dynamic continental ecosystems characterised by river channels, floodplains, riparian forests, seasonal wetlands and open areas. It shared this landscape with dinosaurs such as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTyrannosaurus rex\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTriceratops\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEdmontosaurus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnkylosaurus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePachycephalosaurus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThescelosaurus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and numerous small theropods, as well as crocodyliforms, turtles, fishes, amphibians, mammals and early birds. Within this ecosystem, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTorosaurus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e would have occupied the role of a large quadrupedal herbivore. Although less common in the fossil record than \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTriceratops\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, it remains equally representative of the ceratopsid diversity present at the end of the Mesozoic.
