Amargasaurus (A. cazaui, `Amarga Canyon Lizard´) is an extinct genus of sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Hauterivian of the Lower Cretaceous period, approximately 130 million years ago, in what is now Argentina.
The Amargasaurus was about 10 meters long and weighed about 1.5 tons. It was a long-necked sauropod, with a neck measuring around half the length of its body. The neck was made up of 14 elongated cervical vertebrae, which allowed it to reach food at a great height. Also, it had a relatively short tail compared to other sauropods.
One of the most distinctive features of Amargasaurus are the neural spines that protruded from its cervical and dorsal vertebrae. These spines were elongated and curved backwards, forming a kind of hump on the neck and back. It is not known with certainty what their function was, but it is believed that they could have had a role in thermoregulation, defense against predators or display.
Amargasaurus is an important dinosaur because it is one of the few known sauropods with elongated neural spines on its neck and back. Furthermore, it is an interesting example of the diversity of sauropods during the Lower Cretaceous of South America.
