Glyptodon clavipes
Glyptodon clavipes was a species of glyptodont, a type of prehistoric mammal belonging to the group of giant armadillos that lived during the Pleistocene, approximately between 2.5 million and 11,000 years ago. These animals shared anatomical characteristics with current armadillos, but unlike them, they had a large bony shell that covered their body, formed by fused dermal plates.

Glyptodon clavipes was characterized by its imposing size, with individuals that could reach lengths of up to 3.3 meters and weigh around a ton. The shell of this glyptodont was made up of numerous bony plates that overlapped, providing robust and protective armor against predators. These plates were adorned with characteristic patterns, which varied between species and could have served for individual identification or thermal regulation.

Like modern armadillos, Glyptodon clavipes had powerful claws on its limbs, which it used to dig and search for food, composed mainly of plants and vegetation. It is believed that these herbivorous animals lived in various regions of South America, from Argentina to Brazil and Uruguay.

Glyptodon clavipes became extinct at the end of the Pleistocene, probably as a result of climatic changes and environmental pressures, as well as the influence of human hunting.
