European green lizard

European green lizard (Lacerta viridis) is a species of reptile belonging to the Lacertidae family that is distributed throughout much of Europe, from the Iberian Peninsula to Ukraine, passing through most European countries.

The European Green Lizard is a medium-sized animal, with an average length of about 20-30 centimeters, although males can measure up to 40 centimeters. It has an elongated and flattened body, with short legs and a long, thin tail. The skin of this species is smooth to the touch and covered with small scales. Its coloration is variable, although it is generally bright green, with a yellow or pale green lateral line. Males are usually brighter than females, with a more pronounced dorsal crest.

European green lizards are diurnal and terrestrial animals, preferring warm, sunny environments such as open fields, grasslands, forests, and scrublands. They feed mainly on insects, spiders, and other invertebrates, although they may also consume small mammals, smaller lizards, and fruit.

Regarding its life in the Anthropocene, the European Green Lizard is currently in a scenario of habitat loss and population decline, mainly due to the degradation of natural habitats, pollution, the introduction of exotic species and change climate. These factors have led to the fact that the European Green Lizard is currently listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as a species of "least concern".

For its conservation, it is necessary to make efforts to protect the natural habitats of this species, promote the restoration of damaged ecosystems and reduce environmental pollution. In addition, it is essential to promote sustainable practices in land management and in the use of natural resources, to minimize human impacts on wildlife and ensure the survival of species such as the European Green Lizard.
