Neovenator salerii is the only known species of the genus Neovenator, a neovenatorid theropod dinosaur that inhabited Europe during the Cretaceous period, about 130 to 125 million years ago. This creature, whose name means "new hunter", had a graceful build and reached a length of approximately 7.6 meters, with an estimated weight between 1,000 and 2,000 kilograms.
The Neovenator was characterized by its elongated and narrow skull, with a nostril that was twice as long as it was tall. It had five teeth in the premaxilla of the snout and a maxilla with a large maxillary fenestra. Its claws had a groove at the top, and both premaxillae were connected by an additional connection.
It is believed to have been a solitary or small-group predator that fed mainly on other dinosaurs and animals of similar size. Its habitat probably included forested areas and coastal areas. Although some features of the Neovenator were initially considered unique, further research revealed that some of these features were shared by other theropods.
In 2015, the front of the Neovenator's snout was discovered to contain a complex system of neurovascular canals, which functioned as sensory organs. Although it was speculated that this trait could have been an adaptation to searching for prey in water, its exact function in Neovenator salerii is still unknown.
