Olorotitan arharensis reached a length of about 8 meters, its body was robust and elongated, with a long, strong tail that provided balance and stability while walking. Like other hadrosaurids, it could move on either two legs or four, which gave it flexibility in searching for food and in mobility through its environment.
One of the most distinctive features of Olorotitan arharensis was its bony crest, which extended backward from the top of its head in the form of an elongated, curved tube. This crest likely had several functions, including visual and auditory communication, as hadrosaurid crests are connected to nasal cavities that could have amplified sounds. In addition, the crest could have been used in identification between individuals or as a sexual attractant.
The skull of Olorotitan arharensis was large and elongated, with a flattened snout that formed a wide, toothless beak, ideal for tearing and shredding vegetation. Its dentition was composed of hundreds of small, tightly packed teeth in dental batteries, allowing it to efficiently process large amounts of fibrous plants. Its diet likely included a variety of low vegetation, such as conifers, ferns, and flowering plants.
This dinosaur inhabited an environment of plains and forests near bodies of water, where it congregated in herds, a behavior that provided some protection from predators. Group living also facilitated the care of young and the search for food, taking advantage of the abundant vegetation in its habitat.
Olorotitan arharensis is a prime example of the diversity and specialisation of hadrosaurids in the Late Cretaceous, and its fossil skeleton, one of the most complete found in Russia, has provided a detailed insight into its anatomy and behaviour. Although it lived at a time when dinosaurs were close to extinction, Olorotitan arharensis represents the culmination of millions of years of duck-billed dinosaur evolution, with adaptations that allowed it to thrive in its environment until the end of the age of dinosaurs.
