Ouranosaurus nigeriensis is an ornithopod dinosaur that lived during the Aptian stage of the Early Cretaceous of present-day Niger and Cameroon, approximately 112 million years ago.
Its name, "Ouranosaurus", means "Ouranos lizard", in reference to the Greek word for "sky", while "nigeriensis" refers to the country where its remains were found.
This dinosaur measured between 7 and 8.3 meters long and weighed 2.2 tons, and is particularly notable for its distinctive sail or crest on its back, which is believed to have had several functions, such as thermoregulation, sexual display or even fat storage. The latest paleontological data suggests that this crest may have been lower than initially thought, extending from the neck to the tail and possibly covered in fur or feather-like tissue.
Ouranosaurus nigeriensis probably fed on low plants and shrubs, thanks to its teeth adapted to crushing plant matter. Furthermore, its bone structure indicates that it was a bipedal animal, capable of moving on both two and four legs.
