Regaliceratops is a genus of ceratopsian dinosaur that lived approximately 68 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period. Its scientific name, Regaliceratops peterhewsi, means "Peter Hews' royal horned face" in reference to its distinctive appearance and the paleontologist who discovered its fossil remains.
Regaliceratops is known to be one of the most unusual and fascinating ceratopsians yet discovered. It is distinguished by its impressive and ornate skull bone structure, which includes large horns in the forehead area and a series of protrusions and crown-like decorations on the back of the head. These features give it a unique and distinctive appearance compared to other ceratopsians.
Although relatively little is known about Regaliceratops due to the paucity of fossils found, it is estimated to have had a length of around 5 to 6 meters and a weight of around 1.5 to 2 tons. Like other ceratopsians, it is believed to have been herbivorous, feeding mainly on low plants and shrubs.
The discovery of Regaliceratops has provided valuable information on the diversity and evolution of ceratopsians. Their ornate skull suggests that these dinosaurs may have had a role in social communication and courtship. Furthermore, their presence in the Alberta region of Canada, where other ceratopsians have been found, indicates that this area was a rich and diverse habitat for these creatures during the Late Cretaceous.
