Scutellosaurus lawleri is a genus of ornithischian dinosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic, approximately 196 to 190 million years ago.
Scutellosaurus was a small bipedal dinosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic period, in what is now North America. It is estimated to have been around 1.2 to 1.5 meters in length and was characterized by its relatively primitive appearance compared to some of the more advanced ornithischian dinosaurs that evolved later.
One of the most distinctive features of Scutellosaurus was the presence of bony plates (osteoderms) embedded in its skin, especially on its back and flanks. These plates formed a type of armor, providing some protection against predators. Furthermore, its name, "Scutellosaurus", is derived from Latin and means "lizard with small shields", referring to these structures.
Although Scutellosaurus did not possess the more elaborate ornamental features of some later ornithischian dinosaurs, it did display features that suggested adaptations early in the evolution of this group. It had short but muscular legs, indicating an ability to move agilely. Its skull was relatively small and was equipped with simple teeth, adapted to chewing low plants and bushes in its environment.
