Corythosaurus casuarius is a species of hadrosaurid dinosaur that lived during the Cretaceous period, specifically in what is now North America, approximately 77 to 75 million years ago. This herbivorous dinosaur was characterized by its distinctive helmet-shaped crest that adorned its head, which resembled a helmet or helmet.
This dinosaur reached a length of around 9 meters and weighed around 3 tons, making it a medium to large herbivore for its time. It is believed that Corythosaurus casuarius moved in packs, which provided protection from predators and made it easier to find food.
Its cranial crest, although its exact function is still debated, is thought to have been used for communication between individuals of the same species, either by emitting sounds or visually to attract mates or deter potential rivals. It has also been suggested that this ridge may have had a role in thermoregulation or as vocal resonance to produce louder sounds.
Corythosaurus casuarius is one of the best-known dinosaurs in the hadrosaurid group due to the abundance of its fossil remains, including complete skeletons and well-preserved skulls.
