The blue-footed booby measures approximately 81 cm in length and has a wingspan of up to 1.5 meters. Its plumage is mostly white, with dark brown or black wings and tail, and a robust light gray beak. These birds are excellent divers, diving into the water from considerable heights to catch fish, which constitute their main source of food. They use their keen vision to spot prey from the air, and their streamlined bodies allow them to dive with precision.
Sula nebouxii form colonies in rocky coastal areas and on islands. Although they are not particularly agile on land due to their webbed feet, they are expert fliers and swimmers. In terms of reproduction, they typically lay one to three eggs, which are incubated by both parents. Interestingly, blue-footed boobies practice biparental care, with both parents sharing incubation and feeding duties for the chicks.
Recent studies have shown that the color of the blue legs is related to the bird's immune health, as the vibrant hue depends on the diet rich in carotenoids. This trait is not only important for courtship, but also reflects the overall health of the individual, increasing its chances of reproductive success.
