Jakapil

Jakapil kaniukura is a basal thyreophore dinosaur that lived during the Middle Cretaceous in South America, about 97 to 94 million years ago. It is the only known species of the genus Jakapil, and its name comes from the Quechua words "jaka", which means "spines", and "pil", which means "hairy", in reference to the spines that covered its body.

This dinosaur was around 1 meter long and its most distinctive feature was the spines that ran along its back, which probably served it for defense and courtship. Although not much is known about its behavior and diet, it is believed that it ate plants and was a terrestrial animal.

The remains of Jakapil kaniukura were discovered in the Allen Formation, in the province of Río Negro, Argentina, in the 1990s. Since then, they have been studied by paleontologists to better understand the evolution of dinosaurs in South America during the Middle Cretaceous.
