Stegosaurus stenops is one of the most well-known and studied species of dinosaurs in the genus Stegosaurus, which lived during the Late Jurassic period, approximately 155 to 150 million years ago. Fossils of Stegosaurus stenops have been found primarily in North America, especially in the Morrison Formation, which encompasses parts of the present-day states of Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah.
This herbivorous dinosaur is famous for its distinctive appearance, characterized by two rows of large bony plates extending along its back and a tail armed with pairs of spines known as thagomizers. The dorsal plates, which could measure up to 60 centimeters in height, were probably used for defense, thermal regulation or courtship displays.
Stegosaurus stenops had a robust, quadrupedal body with hind legs considerably longer than its front legs, giving it a forward-leaning posture. It is estimated that this dinosaur could reach a length of approximately 7 meters and a weight of around 3 tons. Its head, small compared to the body, housed a relatively small brain. It had a horny beak at the front of its mouth and small teeth at the back, adapted for chewing hard, fibrous plants, such as ferns and cycads.
