Product description and measurements

Mellisuga helenae , commonly known as the bee hummingbird, is the world's smallest bird and a living jewel of the Caribbean. Endemic to Cuba, particularly the Isle of Youth and parts of eastern Cuba, this tiny hummingbird belongs to the Trochilidae family and the Mellisuga genus, which includes the smallest hummingbird species.

Adult male Mellisuga helenae measure just 5.5 centimeters in total length—almost half of which is the beak and tail—and weigh around 1.6 grams, while females are slightly larger, reaching up to 6.1 centimeters and 2.6 grams. Despite their tiny size, their plumage is strikingly beautiful: males sport a bright, iridescent pinkish-red throat that sparkles like a jewel in the light, contrasting with a metallic blue-green body. Females, more discreet in color, have greenish tones on their backs and a grayish-white belly.

Its small size is matched by an extremely fast metabolism. The hummingbird flaps its wings between 70 and 80 times per second while hovering, and its heart can beat more than 1,200 times per minute. These energy demands force it to feed almost constantly on flower nectar, especially on native species adapted to its tiny beak, such as those of the genera Hamelia , Ipomoea , and Cestrum . It also consumes small insects and spiders, which provide it with essential protein. During the day, it can visit up to 1,500 flowers to satisfy its energy needs.

Despite its apparent fragility, Mellisuga helenae is a territorial and combative bird. Males aggressively defend their feeding areas against other hummingbirds, often swooping or performing intimidating acrobatic flights. Their courtship display includes a series of dives and aerial displays that showcase their iridescent plumage in the sunlight.

The female is solely responsible for reproduction. She builds a tiny nest of plant fibers, cobwebs, and lichens, barely the size of a coin, and lays two white, pea-sized eggs. Incubation lasts 14 to 16 days, and the young are fed regurgitated nectar and insects until they are ready to fly, about three weeks after hatching.

Due to its restricted distribution and habitat loss due to deforestation, the zunzuncito has been classified as a "near threatened" species by the IUCN. Its ecological fragility, combined with its biological uniqueness, makes it a symbol of Cuba's natural wealth and an emblem of the need to conserve island habitats. Despite its almost invisible size, Mellisuga helenae is a true giant in the evolutionary history of birds, adapted with exquisite precision to a unique ecological niche.

So if you love dinosaurs and animals as much as we do, this is your favorite store to collect and paint them :)

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.

Information about the models

The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.

Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.

Handmade

All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

We are authorized distributors

We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
