Product description and measurements

Nigersaurus taqueti was an extremely specialized rebbachisaurid sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 115–105 million years ago (Aptian–Albian), in what is now the Republic of Niger, when much of the present-day Sahara was an extensive green fluvial plain with abundant vegetation and large river systems. Its fossils come mainly from the Elrhaz Formation, in the Gadoufaoua region. It was formally described in 1999 by paleontologist Paul Sereno, although initial remains had already been discovered decades earlier by Philippe Taquet, to whom the epithet taqueti is dedicated.

Dimensions and general morphology

Unlike the classic image of gigantic sauropods, Nigersaurus was relatively small for its group. It measured approximately 9 meters in length and weighed around 2–4 tons, comparable to the weight of a modern African elephant. It had a short neck for a diplodocoid, a long balancing tail, and a relatively light body, although supported by robust limbs.

One of its most extraordinary features was the extreme pneumatization of the skeleton: many vertebrae were filled with air cavities connected to air sacs, making the body surprisingly light. Some parts of the skull were so thin that, according to researchers, light could pass through the bone. This explains why its remains are often found fragmented and poorly preserved.

The strangest skull among sauropods

The most famous feature of Nigersaurus was its highly specialized head. It possessed an extremely wide and square snout, even wider than the back of the skull, giving it a shovel-like or vacuum-cleaner-like appearance. In fact, Paul Sereno described it as "the strangest dinosaur" he had ever seen, comparing its mouth to an industrial vacuum cleaner.

The most extraordinary thing was its dentition:

  • More than 500 teeth, including functional and replacement teeth.
  • Organized into compact dental batteries.
  • Extremely fast tooth replacement: approximately every 14 days.
  • Teeth located exclusively at the front end of the mouth, something virtually unique among tetrapods.

Its jaws were oriented transversely, forming a true plant "shearing bar." The dental enamel was highly asymmetrical, much thicker on one side of the tooth, optimizing wear for cutting soft vegetation. It is also believed that the snout may have been covered by a keratinous sheath, similar to a partial beak.

Diet: the "Mesozoic cow"

Nigersaurus was a specialized low-browsing herbivore. Unlike many sauropods that reached high vegetation, this dinosaur kept its head close to the ground to feed on:

  • Ferns
  • Horsetails
  • Primitive angiosperms
  • Soft riparian vegetation

Its dental system functioned like a huge continuous shear, cutting vegetation close to the ground with enormous efficiency. For this reason, some paleontologists nicknamed it the "Mesozoic cow", as it probably grazed constantly in a manner similar to modern large herbivores.

Head posture and biomechanics

For years there was debate about the usual neck position. Initial reconstructions suggested that it kept its snout permanently pointing downwards, ideal for grazing the ground. Later studies indicated that it probably held its neck more horizontally, although frequently lowering its head during feeding.

Paleoenvironment and associated fauna

The environment where it lived was very different from the current desert. Niger was then a tropical ecosystem of rivers, riparian forests, and floodplains. It shared its habitat with spectacular fauna such as:

  • Sarcosuchus imperator, the gigantic “SuperCroc.”
  • Suchomimus tenerensis, a large piscivorous predator.
  • Ouranosaurus nigeriensis.
  • Lurdusaurus arenatus.
  • Other rebbachisaurid sauropods and titanosaurs.

Evolutionary importance

Nigersaurus taqueti is one of the most anatomically extreme sauropods ever discovered. It represents a very advanced dietary specialization within the Rebbachisauridae, showing how some sauropods evolved into very specific ecological niches, occupying a role similar to that of modern large grazing herbivores. Furthermore, its skull was one of the first dinosaur skulls digitally reconstructed using computed tomography (CT scan), revolutionizing the study of dinosaurs with extremely delicate bones.

Collector's item ; Hyper-realistic replica, highly detailed and with a high degree of scientific precision.

Made to scale, prototyped in resin and with a scenic base in most of the models offered. If you like miniatures, both for collecting and for painting, we offer you a wide variety of scale replicas; All of them related to dinosaurs, extinct prehistoric fauna and current fauna.

So if you love dinosaurs and animals as much as we do, this is your favorite store to collect and paint them :)

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.

    Information about the models

The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.

Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.

    Handmade

All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

    We are authorized distributors

We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
