Product details
Akainacephalus johnsoni was an ankylosaurid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of North America, known from remains recovered from the Kaiparowits Formation in southern Utah, within the ancient island-continent of Laramidia. Formally described in 2018 by Wiersma and Randall Irmis, this taxon represents one of the most complete ankylosaurids known from southern Laramidia and provides key information on the regional diversity of armoured dinosaurs during the Campanian, approximately 76 million years ago. Its generic name combines Greek terms associated with “spine” or “thorn” and “head”, referring to the prominent spiny ornamentation of the skull, while the specific epithet johnsoni honours Randy Johnson, a fossil preparator at the Natural History Museum of Utah.
The holotype specimen, catalogued as UMNH VP 20202, preserves a complete skull and a significant portion of the postcranial skeleton, including both mandibles, the predentary, dorsal, dorsosacral, sacral, and caudal vertebrae, ribs, the pectoral girdle, limb elements, a partial pelvis, cervical, dorsal, and lateral osteoderms, as well as a complete tail club. This material represents approximately 45% of the known skeletal elements of the animal, making Akainacephalus johnsoni one of the best-represented ankylosaurids from southern Laramidia. Its body anatomy indicates a low, broad, and robust quadrupedal herbivore, with an estimated body length of around 4–5 metres, an approximate hip height of 1–1.5 metres, and a mass probably within the range of medium-to-large ankylosaurids, although no weight estimate is available with the same level of precision as for other better-known dinosaurs.
From a morphometric perspective, Akainacephalus johnsoni displayed the typical proportions of a derived ankylosaurid: a broad and low trunk, relatively short and powerful limbs, a low centre of gravity, a long reinforced tail, and a short, wide, heavily ornamented head. The skull, complete in the holotype, is notable for its compact appearance and for the presence of caputegulae — cranial bony plates — with pyramidal, conical, and spiny morphologies, symmetrically distributed across the frontal, nasal, and supraorbital regions. The supraorbital prominences are especially pronounced, the squamosal and jugal horns contribute to an angular cranial outline, and the dorsal ornamentation of the skull produces the “spiny head” appearance that gives the genus its name. The postcranial armour consisted of osteoderms of different sizes and shapes, including partial cervical half-rings and dorsal and lateral plates, which would have protected the neck, back, and flanks of the animal.
Like other ankylosaurids, Akainacephalus johnsoni was a slow- to moderately moving quadrupedal herbivore, adapted to terrestrial life in continental ecosystems. Its robust limbs were designed to support a heavy, armoured body rather than for running, while the tail ended in a complete bony club formed by modified caudal vertebrae and fused terminal osteoderms. This structure probably functioned as a defensive mechanism against large predators, combining a rigid, muscular tail with an expanded distal end capable of delivering powerful impacts. The presence of extensive dermal armour, a reinforced skull, and a developed tail club places Akainacephalus within the classic anatomical model of the most specialized ankylosaurids.
One of the most interesting aspects of Akainacephalus johnsoni is its phylogenetic relationship with Asian ankylosaurids and with Nodocephalosaurus kirtlandensis from New Mexico. Its discovery suggests that faunal exchanges occurred between Asia and North America during the Late Cretaceous, and that southern Laramidia maintained its own diversity of ankylosaurids with highly distinctive cranial features. The presence of this taxon in the Kaiparowits Formation reinforces the idea that the ecosystems of southern Utah supported a rich and regionally differentiated dinosaur fauna, shared with hadrosaurids, ceratopsids, tyrannosaurids, small theropods, crocodyliforms, turtles, and other vertebrates.
This replica represents Akainacephalus johnsoni as an ankylosaurid with a compact and powerful silhouette, an actual body length of approximately 4–5 metres, a low and broad body, robust limbs, well-developed dermal armour, a defensive tail with a terminal club, and a skull especially ornamented by spiny osteoderms. Its reconstruction integrates the information available from the original scientific description, highlighting the morphometric and anatomical traits that make this species one of the most distinctive armoured dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous of Laramidia.

Made to scale, prototyped in resin and with a scenic base in most of the models offered. If you like miniatures, both for collecting and for painting, we offer you a wide variety of scale replicas; All of them related to dinosaurs, extinct prehistoric fauna and current fauna.
So if you love dinosaurs and animals as much as we do, this is your favorite store to collect and paint them :)
We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.
Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.
Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.
Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.
Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.
All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.
Information about the models
The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.
Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.
Handmade
All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

We are authorized distributors
We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
