Australodelphis mirus was a fossil odontocete belonging to Delphinidae, the family of oceanic dolphins, known from Pliocene deposits of East Antarctica. Formally described by Fordyce, Quilty and Daniels in 2002, this taxon represents one of the most unusual fossil delphinids from the Southern Hemisphere because of its combination of true dolphin affinities and a cranial anatomy convergent with that of ziphiids, or beaked whales. Its generic name may be interpreted as “southern dolphin”, referring to its Antarctic origin, while the specific epithet mirus alludes to its unusual or remarkable character.

Geologically, Australodelphis mirus is known from shallow-marine strata of the Sørsdal Formation at Marine Plain, Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica. The species dates to the Early Pliocene and occurs within a glaciomarine context that records ancient coastal environments along the polar margin of the Southern Ocean. The original description identified it as a small extinct dolphin known from five individuals, making it particularly significant for understanding odontocete diversity in Antarctic waters following the breakup of Gondwana and during the development of Southern Ocean ecosystems.

The most distinctive feature of Australodelphis mirus was its ziphiid-like skull, meaning that its cranial morphology superficially resembled that of certain modern beaked whales, although it is phylogenetically interpreted as a delphinid. It possessed an elongated but almost entirely toothless rostrum, an exceptionally unusual condition within Delphinidae, where most living and fossil species retain functional teeth for capturing fish. This dental reduction, together with the shape of the skull and the topography of the facial region, suggests ecological convergence with odontocetes specialised for suction feeding.

From a morphometric perspective, Australodelphis mirus should be interpreted as a small dolphin. Because no perfectly preserved complete skeleton is known, estimates of total body length remain tentative. A conservative reconstruction would place it at approximately 1.5–2.5 metres in length, broadly comparable to small- or medium-sized oceanic dolphins.

Its general anatomy would have been hydrodynamic, with a fusiform body, functional pectoral flippers, a propulsive tail fluke and a head specialised for echolocation. The available anatomical information derives mainly from skulls, ear bones and postcranial elements belonging to several individuals rather than from complete articulated skeletons.

The ecology of Australodelphis mirus is interpreted from its unusual convergence with beaked whales. The functional absence of teeth along the rostrum would have made prey capture through direct jaw gripping less effective, leading researchers to propose a suction-feeding strategy, possibly targeting cephalopods or other soft-bodied organisms.

This hypothesis is consistent with comparisons to modern beaked whales, many of which capture prey by suction and rely on advanced echolocation in deep or structurally complex marine environments. In the case of Australodelphis, however, its occurrence in shallow Antarctic marine deposits suggests that it may have exploited coastal or continental-shelf resources rather than the same deep-water habitats used by many living ziphiids.

Australodelphis mirus inhabited cold or cool-temperate seas along the Antarctic margin during the Early Pliocene, at a time of major climatic and glaciomarine change in the Southern Hemisphere. Its discovery is particularly important because it represents one of the most unusual fossil cetaceans known from Antarctica and demonstrates that delphinids evolved a much wider range of cranial morphologies and feeding strategies than is seen among living species.

Its combination of true delphinid affinities, a nearly toothless rostrum and a ziphiid-like appearance makes it a key species for illustrating the evolutionary diversity of Southern Hemisphere odontocetes.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.
