Product description and measurements

Carcharodontosaurus saharicus was a gigantic carcharodontosaurid theropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Africa, known primarily from fossil remains recovered from the northern part of the continent, especially Morocco, Algeria, Egypt and Niger. It lived during the Cenomanian, approximately 100–94 million years ago, in fluvial and deltaic ecosystems associated with the large continental systems of northern Gondwana. Its name means “shark-toothed lizard”, referring to the laterally compressed and serrated shape of its teeth, functionally comparable to blades designed for slicing tissue.

Taxonomically, Carcharodontosaurus saharicus belongs to Carcharodontosauridae, a lineage of large allosauroid theropods that included some of the largest terrestrial predators known, such as Giganotosaurus and Mapusaurus. The original material described in the early 20th century came from Egypt and was destroyed during the Second World War, meaning that much of our modern understanding of the species relies on material discovered later in North Africa. New partial skulls and postcranial remains have made it possible to reassess its anatomy and distinguish it from other large African carcharodontosaurids.

From a morphometric perspective, Carcharodontosaurus saharicus was an enormous theropod. Modern estimates commonly place large adults at around 12–13 metres in body length, with an approximate mass of 5–7 tonnes, although these values may vary depending on the specimen and reconstruction method. Its body was bipedal, elongated and muscular, with powerful hind limbs, a long tail for balance and relatively reduced forelimbs that remained functional and bore three fingers.

The skull was one of its most impressive features. In large individuals it reached a length of around 1.5 metres or more, while remaining relatively lightweight for its size thanks to extensive cranial fenestrae. The snout was tall and deep, the jaws were long, and the teeth were laterally compressed, recurved and equipped with fine serrations along both cutting edges. This dentition was adapted to inflict deep cuts and extensive wounds rather than crushing bone through highly concentrated bite forces like those of tyrannosaurids.

The biomechanics of Carcharodontosaurus probably favoured attacks based on rapid bites, repeated slashing injuries and blood loss in large prey. Its large skull, powerful neck musculature and blade-like dentition suggest a strategy specialised for attacking large vertebrates, possibly including sauropods, ornithischians and other dinosaurs inhabiting the ecosystems of North Africa. Although its absolute bite force would have been considerable because of its size, cranial morphology indicates that it was not constructed exclusively to withstand the enormous crushing loads associated with Tyrannosaurus rex.

The head also displayed rugose surfaces and bony ridges around the orbital and nasal regions. These structures may have supported keratinous coverings or ornamental soft tissues and could have played roles in visual recognition, display or interactions between individuals. The exact form of these tissues is not preserved, so external reconstructions should remain conservative and be based directly on the texture and morphology of the underlying bone.

The neck was robust and heavily muscled to move and stabilise the enormous skull during prey capture. The vertebral column and pelvic girdle supported a powerful torso, while the hind limbs were adapted to the terrestrial locomotion of a predator weighing several tonnes. It would not have been a specialised runner comparable to smaller theropods, but it was probably capable of rapid movement over relatively short distances and sufficient manoeuvrability to attack large herbivores.

Carcharodontosaurus saharicus inhabited some of the most extraordinary ecosystems of Cretaceous Africa. In North Africa, it coexisted with other large predators such as Spinosaurus and abelisaurids, as well as giant crocodyliforms, large fishes, turtles, pterosaurs and sauropods. This concentration of large carnivores was probably possible because of the diversity of ecological niches available within extensive river systems, where different predators could specialise in terrestrial, riparian or aquatic resources.

Ecologically, Carcharodontosaurus would have occupied one of the highest levels of the terrestrial food chain. Its enormous size, deep skull and slicing dentition identify it as a macropredator specialised in large vertebrates. Its coexistence with other apex predators demonstrates that the Cenomanian ecosystems of North Africa were highly productive and capable of supporting an exceptionally diverse community of large carnivores.

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.

All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.
