Compsognathus longipes

Compsognathus longipes was a small coelurosaurian theropod dinosaur from the Late Jurassic of Europe, known primarily from two nearly complete skeletons recovered from the famous lithographic limestone deposits of Solnhofen in Bavaria, Germany, and Canjuers in south-eastern France. Originally described by Johann Andreas Wagner in 1861, this taxon became one of the classic species of European palaeontology and was long celebrated as one of the smallest known non-avian dinosaurs. Its generic name means “elegant jaw” or “refined jaw”, while the specific epithet longipes refers to its long hind limbs.

Geologically, Compsognathus longipes lived during the Late Jurassic, particularly from the latest Kimmeridgian to the Tithonian, approximately 150 million years ago. The environments of Solnhofen and Canjuers consisted of coastal lagoon systems, islands, shallow carbonate settings and finely sedimented basins, where exceptional preservation conditions allowed reptiles, fishes, invertebrates, pterosaurs, early birds such as Archaeopteryx, and small theropod dinosaurs to fossilise in remarkable detail. The French specimen from Canjuers was revised in 2006 and regarded as a subjective synonym of Compsognathus longipes, expanding anatomical knowledge of the species beyond the original Bavarian specimen.

From a morphometric perspective, Compsognathus longipes was a small and gracile theropod. The German specimen, traditionally interpreted as the smaller individual, measures approximately 85–90 centimetres in total length, while the French specimen reaches around 1.20–1.25 metres. Hip height would have been relatively low, approximately 25–35 centimetres depending on the individual and reconstructed posture, and body mass was probably only a few kilograms. These proportions made it a lightweight, fast and very slender animal, quite unlike the large predatory theropods of the Jurassic. The palaeontological literature generally places compsognathids among small basal coelurosaurs, typically around one metre in length.

Anatomically, Compsognathus longipes possessed a narrow, elongated skull, delicate jaws, small sharp teeth, a flexible neck, a lightly built torso, a long tail and proportionally well-developed hind limbs. Its long legs suggest active and agile locomotion, well suited to moving rapidly through insular or coastal environments. The forelimbs were shorter than the hind limbs but remained functional, with hands capable of assisting in the capture or restraint of small prey. Detailed studies of the hand morphology of Compsognathus have also contributed to revisions of the diagnosis of Compsognathidae and to understanding the early evolution of the hand in basal coelurosaurs.

The diet of Compsognathus longipes is among the best documented for a small Jurassic theropod thanks to preserved abdominal contents. The German specimen contains the remains of a small lizard in the abdominal region, traditionally identified as Bavarisaurus, while the French specimen preserves partially digested remains of small reptiles. This evidence indicates that Compsognathus was an active predator of small vertebrates, probably capable of capturing lizards, juvenile reptiles, large insects and other small animals. Its lightweight build, fine dentition and long hind limbs are consistent with a fast and opportunistic hunting lifestyle.

Although no direct feather impressions are known in association with Compsognathus longipes, its position within Coelurosauria and the presence of filamentous integument in related compsognathids such as Sinosauropteryx make some form of simple filamentous covering, at least partial, a plausible reconstruction. This interpretation should be applied cautiously, clearly distinguishing between direct evidence and comparative inference, but it is consistent with the modern view of many small coelurosaurian theropods as having a more bird-like appearance than traditionally reptilian reconstructions.
