Deinocheirus is a genus of theropod dinosaur that inhabited what is now Mongolia during the Cretaceous period between the Campanian and Maastrichtian, approximately 70 million years ago. The best known species within this genus is Deinocheirus mirificus, which is characterized by its unusual size and distinctive appearance.
Deinocheirus was a giant dinosaur, with an estimated length of around 11 meters and a height of approximately 4 meters at the hip. However, much of their body remains a mystery, as they were known primarily for their extremely long arms and partial skull.
Deinocheirus's arms were extremely long, measuring around 2.4 meters. These arms were equipped with huge, curved claws, reaching over half a meter in length. Although these arms were initially known before the rest of the skeleton, it was unknown what type of dinosaur they belonged to, leading to speculation and inaccurate descriptions in the past.
The partially known skull of Deinocheirus showed a crest on top, suggesting that it may have had a distinctive cranial structure. However, much of the mandible and other anatomical details have yet to be discovered.
Since much of the Deinocheirus skeleton remains unknown, there has been speculation about its diet and lifestyle. It is believed that it was an omnivorous dinosaur, feeding on plants and also on small animals that it could catch. Its size and claws suggest that it may have been an efficient predator, although it may also have been a scavenger due to its size and strength.
