Desmostylus hesperus was a semi-aquatic marine mammal from the Miocene belonging to Desmostylia, an extinct order of mammals known exclusively from the North Pacific. Unlike sirenians, pinnipeds or cetaceans, desmostylians represented a distinct evolutionary lineage that has completely disappeared. They have traditionally been associated with Tethytheria, the broader evolutionary group that includes sirenians and proboscideans. The generic name means “joined columns”, referring to the highly distinctive structure of its molars, which were composed of grouped cylindrical cusps, while the specific epithet hesperus refers to its western North American origin.

Geologically, Desmostylus hesperus lived during the Miocene and is especially well represented in fossil deposits along the coasts of the North Pacific, both in North America and Japan. The species is known from material recovered in California, Oregon, Washington and Baja California, as well as from well-preserved skeletons found in Japan, including specimens from Hokkaido. Desmostylians as a group ranged from the Late Oligocene to the Late Miocene, but Desmostylus hesperus is primarily associated with Miocene faunas from coastal, estuarine and shallow-marine environments along the Pacific margin.

From a morphometric perspective, Desmostylus hesperus was a large and robust animal with a heavy body and powerful limbs. The well-known adult Keton specimen has frequently been used as a reference for body-size estimates, suggesting an approximate total length of around 2.7–3 metres, a shoulder height of about 1 metre and a body mass exceeding one tonne. Some larger isolated remains indicate that certain individuals may have reached considerably greater dimensions, although extreme estimates should be treated cautiously because they are based on incomplete material. Its general appearance may have superficially resembled a combination of a hippopotamus, tapir and primitive marine mammal, although anatomically it belonged to none of these groups.

One of the most distinctive features of Desmostylus hesperus was its dentition. Its molars consisted of grouped cylindrical columns of enamel, producing a highly unusual wear surface unlike that of other marine mammals. This dental morphology has been interpreted as an adaptation for processing abrasive vegetation or coastal plant resources, although its feeding ecology has remained the subject of debate for decades. Isotopic studies of the dental enamel of Desmostylus and associated vertebrates have revealed an apparently paradoxical combination: signatures compatible with feeding in aquatic or marine environments, but habitat and resource preferences that do not fit neatly within simple models based on modern marine herbivores.

The postcranial anatomy of Desmostylus hesperus indicates an animal adapted to an amphibious or semi-aquatic lifestyle, capable of moving both on land and in water. Its limbs were strong, with robust bones and proportions that have been functionally compared with those of large semi-aquatic mammals. However, its locomotion was not directly equivalent to that of modern hippopotamuses, sirenians or pinnipeds. Studies of the postcranial skeleton of the Utanobori specimen from Hokkaido have allowed comparisons with other nearly complete skeletons and helped refine interpretations of its posture, swimming abilities and movement through coastal environments.

Desmostylus hesperus probably inhabited coastlines, estuaries, bays, river mouths and shallow seas of the North Pacific during the Miocene. In these ecosystems, it coexisted with sharks, bony fishes, early cetaceans, primitive pinnipeds, sirenians, seabirds and other coastal vertebrates. Its ecological role was probably that of a large consumer of aquatic or shoreline vegetation, although the exact types of plants or resources it exploited remain uncertain. Some studies have proposed a diet involving algae, seagrasses or other coastal resources, while other evidence suggests a more complex ecology that may have included movement between marine and terrestrial environments.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.
