Eurhinodelphis cocheteuxi

Eurhinodelphis cocheteuxi was a eurhinodelphinid odontocete from the Miocene of Europe, known primarily from fossil remains recovered in the Antwerp region of Belgium, within marine deposits along the southern margin of the former North Sea Basin. Originally described by Du Bus in 1867 and later revised on the basis of additional cranial material, this taxon represents one of the most characteristic long-snouted fossil dolphins of the European Miocene. Its generic name may be interpreted as “true-nosed dolphin” or “well-developed-snouted dolphin”, referring to the extraordinary elongation of its rostrum, while the specific epithet cocheteuxi honours Cocheteux, a figure associated with the history of the Belgian fossil material.

Geologically, Eurhinodelphis cocheteuxi is known from Miocene deposits in Belgium, particularly from the upper Lower Miocene to Middle Miocene of the Antwerp area. Some historical specimens in Belgian collections have also been associated with younger Miocene levels, including the Tortonian deposits of Mortsel. These sediments record shallow and highly productive marine environments within the North Sea Basin, inhabited by cetaceans, early pinnipeds, sharks, bony fishes, marine invertebrates and other coastal vertebrates.

Eurhinodelphis cocheteuxi belonged to Eurhinodelphinidae, an extinct group of odontocetes characterised by extremely long and narrow rostra, elongated skulls and adaptations associated with the capture of fast-moving marine prey. Lambert’s revision of specimens from Antwerp highlighted the importance of a skull associated with auditory bones, including the periotics, tympanic bullae, malleus and incus. This material helped clarify its phylogenetic affinities and confirmed its position within Eurhinodelphinidae. These auditory elements are particularly significant because they contribute to our understanding of the early evolution of hearing and echolocation in fossil odontocetes.

From a morphometric perspective, Eurhinodelphis cocheteuxi was probably a medium-sized odontocete, broadly comparable to a large oceanic dolphin. Although total body-length estimates remain approximate because many specimens are incomplete, a conservative reconstruction would place it at around 2.5–3.5 metres in total length.

Its most distinctive feature was the extremely elongated, narrow and toothed rostrum, which occupied a very large proportion of the skull and gave the animal a silhouette markedly different from that of modern short-snouted dolphins. The maxillae and mandibles would have housed numerous conical teeth adapted for gripping small- to medium-sized fishes and cephalopods.

The overall anatomy of Eurhinodelphis cocheteuxi suggests a streamlined marine animal with a fusiform body, functional pectoral flippers, a propulsive tail fluke and a skull specialised for the rapid capture of prey. Its long rostrum may have provided an efficient structure for moving through the water with limited resistance and intercepting fast-moving fishes, broadly comparable in ecological concept to other long-snouted odontocetes, although it was not directly related to modern river dolphins or swordfish.

The combination of a highly elongated snout, numerous teeth and a specialised auditory system indicates an active marine predator, probably capable of using advanced acoustic abilities within Miocene coastal ecosystems.

Eurhinodelphis cocheteuxi inhabited temperate, relatively shallow seas of north-western Europe during the Miocene, at a time of major odontocete diversification. Its presence in the Antwerp Basin makes it an important species for understanding the richness of marine mammal communities in the ancient North Sea and the evolution of long-snouted dolphin-like forms that are now extinct.

Together with Eurhinodelphis longirostris, it is one of the few eurhinodelphinids securely recognised from the Belgian Miocene, reinforcing its scientific importance within the European fossil record.
