Product description and measurements

Futalognkosaurus dukei was a gigantic titanosaurian sauropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Patagonia, Argentina, known from remains recovered from the Portezuelo Formation on the northern shore of Lake Barreales, Neuquén Province. It was formally described in 2007 by Jorge O. Calvo, Juan D. Porfiri, Bernardo J. González Riga and Alexander W. A. Kellner. Its name derives from Mapudungun, in which “futa” means “giant” and “lognko” or “lonko” refers to a chief or leader, so the name can be interpreted approximately as “giant chief lizard”. The specific name dukei honours Duke Energy Argentina, a company that supported the excavations.

Geologically, Futalognkosaurus dukei comes from the Portezuelo Formation of the Neuquén Group, a unit deposited during the late Turonian–early Coniacian of the Late Cretaceous, approximately 92–89 million years ago. Recent studies continue to regard Futalognkosaurus as one of the characteristic sauropods of this Patagonian formation. The sediments represent continental environments dominated by fluvial systems, including meandering channels, floodplains and a rich associated biota.

Taxonomically, Futalognkosaurus dukei belongs to Titanosauria and forms part of Lognkosauria, a clade of gigantic titanosaurs characterised by particularly robust necks and including Mendozasaurus neguyelap and other closely related large South American sauropods. The original description established Lognkosauria on the basis of the most recent common ancestor of Mendozasaurus and Futalognkosaurus and all of its descendants. Its vertebral anatomy, particularly that of the cervical and dorsal regions, displays a combination of features that distinguishes it from other giant titanosaurs.

One of the most important aspects of Futalognkosaurus dukei is the exceptional completeness of its skeleton for such a gigantic sauropod. The holotype, MUCPv-323, preserves the atlas, axis, numerous cervical vertebrae, ten dorsal vertebrae, ribs, a complete sacrum, both ilia, the right pubis, an ischium and an anterior caudal vertebra. Later anatomical studies highlighted that it preserves an almost complete cervical series, dorsal vertebrae with ribs, pelvic elements and caudal material, making it one of the best anatomically represented giant titanosaurs.

From a morphometric perspective, Futalognkosaurus dukei was one of the largest dinosaurs known from Patagonia. The original description proposed an approximate body length of 32–34 metres, although later revisions have tended to favour somewhat more conservative estimates after reassessing the body proportions of giant titanosaurs. It is therefore prudent to regard it as a sauropod approximately 26–30 metres in length, although some reconstructions place it above this range. Its mass would have been several tens of tonnes, probably around 30–50 tonnes, depending on the volumetric reconstruction method used. Exact figures should be treated as estimates, since no complete skeleton with an entirely associated skull and limbs is preserved.

Its enormous pelvis is one of the most impressive parts of the skeleton. The preserved sacrum reaches approximately 2.55 metres in width, an extraordinary dimension even among giant sauropods, and indicates an extremely broad and deep torso. This body configuration, combined with robust cervical vertebrae, distinguishes lognkosaurs from more gracile titanosaurs and suggests a massively built animal with a very broad ribcage and columnar limbs capable of supporting an enormous body mass.

The neck was long but particularly robust. The cervical vertebrae display tall neural spines and complex laminar structures that provided extensive attachment surfaces for muscles and ligaments. This anatomy would have allowed the animal to support and move a very large neck while retaining a relatively lightweight vertebral construction through the presence of internal pneumatic cavities, a common feature among sauropods.

Like other titanosaurs, Futalognkosaurus dukei probably had a proportionally small skull relative to its body, although no complete skull can be directly attributed to the holotype. Its head is therefore reconstructed through comparison with related titanosaurs, probably with a relatively broad snout and simple, narrow teeth that were continuously replaced. Its diet would have consisted of vegetation, with the long neck allowing it to reach food resources both close to the ground and at considerable height without constantly moving its enormous body.

Ecologically, Futalognkosaurus was a megaherbivore inhabiting the great fluvial systems of Patagonia. At the Lake Barreales locality, its remains were found alongside those of other vertebrates, including theropods such as Megaraptor namunhuaiquii and Unenlagia paynemili, as well as turtles, crocodyliforms, pterosaurs, fish and abundant plant remains, including angiosperms. This association suggests a humid and highly productive continental ecosystem capable of supporting sauropods of gigantic size.

Its enormous body size would have provided adult individuals with considerable protection from most predators, although juveniles or weakened animals may have been vulnerable to large theropods. Like other sauropods, Futalognkosaurus probably relied primarily on its body mass, powerful limbs and long tail as defensive mechanisms. Group living or temporary associations are plausible for titanosaurs, although there is currently insufficient evidence to determine the social organisation of Futalognkosaurus with confidence.

Information about aftershocks

Collector's item ; Hyper-realistic replica, highly detailed and with a high degree of scientific precision.

Made to scale, prototyped in resin and with a scenic base in most of the models offered. If you like miniatures, both for collecting and for painting, we offer you a wide variety of scale replicas; All of them related to dinosaurs, extinct prehistoric fauna and current fauna.

So if you love dinosaurs and animals as much as we do, this is your favorite store to collect and paint them :)

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.

Information about the models

The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.

Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.

Handmade

All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

We are authorized distributors

We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
