Product description and measurements

Giganotosaurus carolinii was one of the largest carnivorous theropod dinosaurs known and likely the dominant apex predator of South America during the early Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian), approximately 99.6–95 million years ago, in what is now Argentine Patagonia. It belonged to the Carcharodontosauridae, a lineage of large predators more closely related to Allosaurus than to Tyrannosaurus rex. It was formally described in 1995 by paleontologists Rodolfo Coria and Leonardo Salgado, based on a remarkably complete skeleton discovered by Rubén Carolini, whose surname lends its name to the species (carolinii).

Dimensions: One of the Largest Terrestrial Predators in History

Modern estimates place the Giganotosaurus holotype at approximately:

  • Length: ~12–13 meters
  • Weight: ~7–8 tons (with some models proposing higher figures)
  • Hip Height: around 3.5–4 meters
  • Skull: ~1.5–1.6 meters long, though older reconstructions suggested up to 1.8 m.

There is also a second mandibular specimen (MUCPv-95) that might belong to a slightly larger individual, suggesting animals potentially close to 13.2–13.5 meters and up to ~8.5–9 tons, though this remains debated.

Anatomy: A Hunter Designed to Inflict Massive Wounds

Unlike Tyrannosaurus rex, whose skull was optimized to withstand extreme crushing forces, Giganotosaurus had distinct biomechanics:

Long, relatively light skull

It possessed a skull that was:

  • Longer and proportionally lower than that of a tyrannosaur.
  • Less structurally robust.
  • Equipped with large fenestrae (skull openings) to reduce weight.

Its teeth were:

  • Long and laterally compressed.
  • Strongly serrated.
  • Designed to cut deeply into flesh, comparable to serrated blades.

The strategy likely involved inflicting massive open wounds and significant blood loss, rather than bone-crushing like T. rex.

Limbs and locomotion

Its body was relatively slender for its size:

  • Long, muscular hind limbs.
  • Powerful tail for stabilization.
  • Proportionally small but functional arms, with three fingers armed with large, curved claws.

The femur was longer than the tibia, suggesting an animal designed more for power and endurance than for high sustained speeds. Even so, it could probably move surprisingly fast for a predator over seven tons.

Brain, Senses, and Behavior

Endocranial studies suggest that Giganotosaurus possessed:

  • A good sense of smell.
  • Reasonably developed binocular vision.
  • Well-adapted balance for a large, active predator.

While there is no definitive evidence, some paleontologists have suggested that related large carcharodontosaurids, such as Mapusaurus, might have exhibited some degree of cooperative hunting, especially against giant sauropods. This has led to speculation—with caution—that Giganotosaurus might have exhibited limited social behaviors.

Paleoecology: The Hunter of Giants

It lived in the Candeleros Formation, a semi-arid ecosystem with large river systems and riparian vegetation in Cretaceous Patagonia. It shared its habitat with some of South America's most impressive animals:

  • The gigantic titanosaur Limaysaurus tessonei.
  • Rebbachisaurids and other enormous sauropods.
  • Terrestrial crocodylomorphs.
  • Small theropod and ornithischian dinosaurs.

Many researchers believe that one of its primary prey might have been large titanosauriform sauropods, using repeated attacks to weaken animals much larger than itself.

Larger than Tyrannosaurus rex?

This is one of the classic debates in paleontology.

In terms of:

  • Body length: Giganotosaurus was probably longer than most T. rex specimens.
  • Body mass: the largest T. rex (like "Sue" or "Scotty") were probably heavier and more robust.
  • Bite force: T. rex clearly wins.
  • Cutting ability and cranial reach: Giganotosaurus possibly had an advantage.

Essentially, they were giant predators specialized in very different ways.

Scientific Importance

Giganotosaurus carolinii is one of the most important large theropod fossils from the Southern Hemisphere because it demonstrated that North America did not monopolize giant predators. It also helped reveal that Carcharodontosauridae reached sizes comparable—or even greater in length—to tyrannosaurids, occupying the role of apex predators before the expansion of Tyrannosaurus rex.

Approximate measurements of the Giganotosaurus:

  • 1:60 Scale Complete
    • Length 161 mm
    • Height 67 mm
    • Width 72 mm
    • Snout-to-tail length 207 mm
  • 1:35 Scale Assembly Kit
    • Length 275 mm
    • Height 114 mm
    • Width 124 mm
    • Snout-to-tail length 355 mm

Collector's item ; Hyper-realistic replica, highly detailed and with a high degree of scientific precision.

Made to scale, prototyped in resin and with a scenic base in most of the models offered. If you like miniatures, both for collecting and for painting, we offer you a wide variety of scale replicas; All of them related to dinosaurs, extinct prehistoric fauna and current fauna.

So if you love dinosaurs and animals as much as we do, this is your favorite store to collect and paint them :)

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.

Information about the models

The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.

Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.

Handmade

All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

We are authorized distributors

We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
