Guidraco venator

Guidraco venator was a toothed pterodactyloid pterosaur from the Early Cretaceous of China, known from an exceptional specimen recovered from the Jiufotang Formation near Lingyuan, Liaoning Province. Formally described in 2012 by Wang Xiaolin, Kellner, Jiang Shunxing and Cheng Xin, this taxon represents one of the most striking members of the Jehol fauna because of its elongated skull, greatly enlarged anterior teeth and close morphological similarities to anhanguerid pterosaurs known from other continents, particularly Brazil. Its name combines the Chinese term gui, associated with a spirit or ghost, with the Latin draco, meaning dragon, while the specific epithet venator means hunter, producing an approximate interpretation of “ghost dragon hunter”.

Geologically, Guidraco venator comes from the Jiufotang Formation, an Early Cretaceous unit generally dated to the Aptian, approximately 120 million years ago. This formation is renowned for preserving numerous vertebrates belonging to the Jehol Biota, including fishes, early birds, feathered dinosaurs, mammals, reptiles and other pterosaurs. The holotype, catalogued as IVPP V17083, preserves an almost complete skull with associated lower jaws and several anterior cervical vertebrae. Coprolites found close to the specimen contain fish remains, providing important evidence for the interpretation of its feeding ecology.

Guidraco venator was characterised by a very long and narrow skull, with jaws armed with large, robust, pointed and slightly recurved anterior teeth. The front of the mouth formed a highly effective prey-capture structure, with upper and lower teeth capable of interlocking or functioning as a trap for gripping slippery prey. This morphology, together with coprolites containing fish vertebrae found beside the fossil, indicates a primarily piscivorous diet based on the capture of fishes in lacustrine, fluvial or coastal environments associated with the Jiufotang depositional system. Although it may also have behaved as an opportunistic predator of small animals, its skull and dentition clearly indicate specialisation for aquatic prey.

From a morphometric perspective, Guidraco venator was a medium- to large-sized pterosaur. The skull of the holotype measures approximately 38 centimetres in length, while its estimated wingspan is generally placed at around 4–5 metres. These dimensions made it a substantial flying animal with a proportionally large head, a relatively long neck and broad wings supported by the greatly elongated fourth finger, as in other pterodactyloids. Some cranial elements in the described specimen were not fully fused, leading the original authors to interpret it as a subadult individual. Fully mature adults may therefore have reached slightly larger dimensions.

One of the most visually distinctive features of Guidraco venator was the presence of a low, rounded cranial crest along the upper surface of the skull. In life, this structure may have been enlarged by soft tissues and could have served in display, species recognition or visual communication, as in many other crested pterosaurs. The combination of an elongated skull, dorsal crest, projecting anterior teeth and slender neck gave the animal an exceptionally recognisable silhouette, clearly different from that of later toothless pterosaurs such as pteranodontids.

The palaeontological importance of Guidraco venator also lies in its biogeographical affinities. The original description identified close similarities between this Asian pterosaur and South American anhanguerid forms, reinforcing the idea that some lineages of toothed pterosaurs had a broader geographical distribution during the Early Cretaceous than previously recognised. Its presence in Liaoning demonstrates that the ecosystems of the Jehol Biota supported not only small forest- or lake-associated pterosaurs, but also larger and highly specialised piscivorous forms integrated into complex aquatic food webs.
