The extinct genus Heteroprox belonged to the order Artiodactyla and inhabited Europe during the Miocene, an era that spanned from approximately 23 million years ago to about 5 million years ago. In terms of size, individuals of this genus were slightly larger than those belonging to the genus Procervulus, another genus of primitive deer that coexisted at the same time and region.

A distinctive feature of the Heteroprox were their antlers, which were deciduous, that is, they fell off and grew back each year, typical of modern deer. In addition, these antlers had a groove in the metatarsals, which could have had some functional purpose, such as strengthening the structure or fixing the muscles.
