Product description and measurements

Hexaprotodon sivalensis was an extinct hippopotamid from the Neogene and Quaternary of South Asia, known mainly from remains recovered from the Siwalik Group, one of the most important continental fossil-bearing sequences of the Indian subcontinent. Traditionally associated with deposits from the latest Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene, this taxon represents one of the most characteristic forms of Asian fossil hippopotamids and helps illustrate the ancient expansion of Hippopotamidae outside Africa. Its generic name, Hexaprotodon, refers to the presence of six anterior incisors, a feature that distinguishes it from modern hippopotamuses of the genus Hippopotamus, while the specific epithet sivalensis refers to the Siwalik region, where many of its remains have been documented.

Anatomically, Hexaprotodon sivalensis was a large semi-aquatic mammal with a robust body, short and powerful limbs, a massive skull, and deep jaws, adapted to a lifestyle closely associated with rivers, lakes, and wetland environments. Like other hippopotamids, it had a specialized dentition, with well-developed incisors and canines at the front of the mouth, as well as broad-crowned molars suited to processing plant material. The presence of six incisors is one of the most important features for its identification, contrasting with the four-incisor condition seen in the living common hippopotamus, Hippopotamus amphibius. This dental difference reflects a greater evolutionary diversity among fossil hippopotamids than is observed in the two living species.

Remains attributed to Hexaprotodon sivalensis include mandibles, isolated teeth, cranial fragments, and postcranial elements recovered from several localities in India and Pakistan. In the Siwalik fossil record, the species appears relatively scarce but significant, associated with large-mammal faunas that include proboscideans, rhinoceroses, bovids, equids, suids, carnivorans, and primates. This faunal association indicates open and riverine ecosystems, with alternating floodplains, gallery forests, wetlands, and grassy areas, where Hexaprotodon sivalensis would have occupied an ecological niche similar to that of modern hippopotamuses: a large amphibious herbivore dependent on water for refuge, thermoregulation, and movement, while feeding mainly on land or along vegetated margins.

Although it is often compared with the modern common hippopotamus, Hexaprotodon sivalensis should not be understood simply as an ancient version of it, but rather as part of an Asian radiation of hippopotamids with its own distinctive features. Studies on fossil hippopotamids from South Asia have indicated that Hexaprotodon was especially representative in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, with a complex evolutionary history and a distribution that extended through different intervals of the late Neogene and Pleistocene. Its presence in the Siwalik fossil record makes it an important component of Asian megafaunal communities that predate modern faunas.

This replica represents Hexaprotodon sivalensis as a large fossil hippopotamid with a heavy build, robust head, low body, and powerful limbs, emphasizing its semi-aquatic adaptation and its distinctive six-incisor dental configuration. Its reconstruction integrates the available information on its geological provenance, mandibular anatomy, herbivorous ecology, and role within the riverine ecosystems of South Asia, offering a rigorous representation of one of the most representative extinct hippopotamuses from the Siwalik fossil record.

Information about aftershocks

Collector's item ; Hyper-realistic replica, highly detailed and with a high degree of scientific precision.

Made to scale, prototyped in resin and with a scenic base in most of the models offered. If you like miniatures, both for collecting and for painting, we offer you a wide variety of scale replicas; All of them related to dinosaurs, extinct prehistoric fauna and current fauna.

So if you love dinosaurs and animals as much as we do, this is your favorite store to collect and paint them :)

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.

Information about the models

The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.

Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.

Handmade

All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

We are authorized distributors

We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
