Jakapil kaniukura

Jakapil kaniukura was a small thyreophoran dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Patagonia, known from remains recovered from the upper levels of the Candeleros Formation in Río Negro Province, Argentina. Formally described in 2022 by Riguetti, Apesteguía, and Pereda-Suberbiola, this taxon represents one of the most singular discoveries of recent years in the study of armoured dinosaurs, as it documents the survival in South America of a lineage of basal thyreophorans at a time when these primitive forms were considered to have virtually disappeared. Its generic name comes from the Puelche language and may be interpreted as “shield bearer,” while the specific epithet kaniukura combines Mapudungun terms related to “crest” and “stone,” referring to the distinctive mandibular anatomy and the fossil nature of the specimen.

The holotype of Jakapil kaniukura preserves a partial skeleton with cranial, mandibular, dental, vertebral, appendicular, and osteodermal elements, sufficient to recognize a highly unusual anatomical combination. Phylogenetically, it has been interpreted either as a basal thyreophoran or as a form close to the stem of Ankylosauria, distantly related to primitive armoured dinosaurs such as Scelidosaurus. This position is especially relevant because it shows that ancient lineages of armoured dinosaurs persisted in Gondwana long after their apparent disappearance on other continents.

From a morphometric perspective, Jakapil kaniukura was a small and lightly built dinosaur. The holotype, interpreted as a subadult individual, would have measured less than 1.5 metres in body length and reached an estimated mass of approximately 4.5–7 kilograms. Its body would have been low, compact, and relatively gracile, with functional hind limbs and short forelimbs. Unlike many derived thyreophorans, traditionally reconstructed as heavy quadrupeds, Jakapil appears to represent a small-bodied form, possibly facultatively bipedal or with a lighter and more active posture than that of later ankylosaurs and stegosaurs.

One of its most distinctive features lies in the lower jaw, which was deep and robust, with a prominent ventral crest that gave it a highly characteristic profile. Its dentition consists of small, compressed teeth adapted for processing vegetation, although with a morphology that is unusual within Thyreophora. The body was protected by osteoderms, dermal bony plates that formed a partial armour and justify its inclusion among armoured dinosaurs. This combination of small size, specialized jaw, short forelimbs, and dermal armour makes it a thyreophoran with a very different appearance from that of classic large ankylosaurs, closer in evolutionary concept to primitive forms but with distinctive traits of Cretaceous South America.

Jakapil kaniukura inhabited continental ecosystems during the Cenomanian, at the beginning of the Late Cretaceous, in environments associated with the Candeleros Formation. These Patagonian landscapes included fluvial systems, sandy plains, and semi-arid areas where sauropod dinosaurs, theropods, small vertebrates, reptiles, and other components of Gondwanan faunas coexisted. In this context, Jakapil would have occupied the role of a small terrestrial herbivore, partially protected by osteoderms and adapted to feeding on low vegetation in an environment where armoured dinosaurs were much rarer than in the fossil records of the Northern Hemisphere.

This replica represents Jakapil kaniukura as a small Patagonian thyreophoran with a compact anatomy, partially armoured body, reduced forelimbs, functional hind limbs, and a deep mandible with a marked ventral crest. Its reconstruction integrates the available information on its osteology, morphometry, geological provenance, and evolutionary position, highlighting one of the most peculiar species from the Late Cretaceous of South America and an exceptional example of the persistence of ancient armoured dinosaur lineages in Gondwana.
