Product details
eholosaurus shangyuanensis was a small herbivorous ornithischian dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous of China, known from remains recovered from the Yixian Formation in Liaoning Province. It lived during the early Aptian, approximately 125 million years ago, and formed part of the extraordinary Jehol Biota, one of the best-preserved fossil ecosystems in the world. It was formally described in 2000 from material found at the Lujiatun locality near Beipiao, and its name refers to Jehol, the historical designation used for the region and its exceptional palaeontological assemblage.
Taxonomically, Jeholosaurus shangyuanensis was a basal neornithischian, representing an early stage in the diversification of derived ornithischians. Its precise phylogenetic position has varied slightly between different analyses, but it is recognised as a form closely related to other small Asian ornithischians and is particularly important for understanding the early evolution of the lineage that would later give rise to highly specialised groups of herbivorous dinosaurs. The abundance of cranial and postcranial material allows its anatomy to be reconstructed in considerable detail for such a small Early Cretaceous dinosaur.
From a morphometric perspective, Jeholosaurus shangyuanensis was a small and lightly built dinosaur. Known specimens indicate an approximate body length of 60–90 centimetres for many individuals, although adults may have reached around 1 metre or slightly more. Its mass was probably only a few kilograms. It had a slender silhouette, with a relatively short torso, long hind limbs, considerably smaller forelimbs and an elongated tail that accounted for a substantial proportion of the animal’s total length.
Its locomotion was primarily bipedal. The long hind limbs, together with a functional tridactyl foot and balancing tail, indicate an agile animal capable of moving rapidly. This mobility would have been one of its principal defences against the numerous small and medium-sized predators of the Jehol Biota. The forelimbs were short but functional and ended in five-fingered hands, retaining a relatively primitive configuration within Ornithischia.
The skull of Jeholosaurus shangyuanensis was small, relatively short and lightly constructed. The snout ended in an anterior region adapted for selecting and cropping vegetation, while the jaws carried small teeth suited to processing plant material. An interesting feature was moderate heterodonty, with differences between the anterior and posterior teeth, reflecting a degree of functional specialisation within the jaw.
The maxillary and dentary teeth possessed crowns adapted for cutting and processing plants, but Jeholosaurus lacked the complex dental batteries that later evolved in iguanodontians and hadrosaurids. Its feeding mechanism was therefore relatively simple. It probably cropped small portions of vegetation with the beak and anterior teeth and then processed them through jaw movements before swallowing.
Its diet would have consisted mainly of low-growing vegetation, including ferns, small gymnosperms, shoots, tender leaves and probably early angiosperms present in Jehol ecosystems. Because of its low body height, it would primarily have exploited food resources close to the ground. Occasional consumption of small invertebrates cannot be completely ruled out, as has been suggested for some small basal ornithischians, but the anatomical evidence primarily supports a herbivorous diet.
The large eyes and relatively large orbits in proportion to the skull probably provided Jeholosaurus with good visual capabilities. Studies of the skeleton and sensory systems of related small ornithischians suggest active animals that depended on well-developed senses to rapidly detect both resources and threats. In an ecosystem containing numerous small theropods, early detection of predators would have been particularly important.
Jeholosaurus shangyuanensis also forms part of a group of small ornithischians that has provided interesting information regarding possible social behaviour. Some ornithischian specimens from the Jehol Biota have been preserved close together, raising the possibility of gregarious associations or juvenile aggregations. Although such concentrations do not automatically demonstrate complex social behaviour, it is plausible that small dinosaurs such as Jeholosaurus may have formed groups as a strategy to improve vigilance against predators.
The palaeoenvironment of the Yixian Formation was very different from the traditional image of a uniformly tropical Cretaceous landscape. The region contained lakes, rivers, temperate forests dominated by conifers and intense volcanic activity. Seasons may have been pronounced and temperatures relatively cool. Frequent volcanic eruptions contributed to the exceptional preservation of the Jehol Biota through rapid burial and ash deposition.
Within this ecosystem, Jeholosaurus lived alongside one of the most extraordinary dinosaur faunas known, including small feathered theropods, dromaeosaurids, troodontids, early tyrannosauroids, oviraptorosaurs and various herbivorous dinosaurs. It also shared its environment with mammals, pterosaurs, primitive birds, lizards, amphibians, fish and countless invertebrates. This diversity makes Jeholosaurus an excellent representative of the small herbivores that occupied the lower levels of the complex food webs of Early Cretaceous Asia.
The evolutionary importance of Jeholosaurus shangyuanensis lies particularly in its combination of primitive and derived features. Its anatomy helps reconstruct the early stages of neornithischian evolution and provides insight into how relatively generalised small bipedal dinosaurs later gave rise to some of the most specialised herbivorous lineages of the Mesozoic.

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.
Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.
Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.
Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.
Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.
All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.
Information about the models
The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.
Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.
Handmade
All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

We are authorized distributors
We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
