Lambeosaurus lambei

Lambeosaurus lambei was a lambeosaurine hadrosaurid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of North America, known primarily from fossil remains recovered from the Dinosaur Park Formation in Alberta, Canada. It lived during the Campanian, approximately 76.5–74.8 million years ago, in the continental ecosystems of western Laramidia, a region characterised by fluvial plains, river channels, riparian forests, wetlands and open areas near the western margin of the Western Interior Seaway. The species was described by William Parks in 1923, and its name honours Canadian palaeontologist Lawrence Lambe, a key figure in the study of Canada’s Cretaceous dinosaurs.

Taxonomically, Lambeosaurus lambei belongs to Hadrosauridae, the group of dinosaurs commonly known as “duck-billed dinosaurs”, and more specifically to Lambeosaurinae, the crested hadrosaurids characterised by complex hollow cranial structures formed by the premaxillary and nasal bones. Within this group, Lambeosaurus is distinguished by its highly recognisable cranial crest, projecting upwards and forwards in a shape resembling an axe or mitre, clearly different from the elongated tubular crest of Parasaurolophus or the more rounded crest of Corythosaurus. This structure was not merely an external ornament but a complex bony architecture traversed by internal nasal passages. Studies of endocranial and internal anatomy in lambeosaurines have interpreted these crests as structures associated with acoustic communication, visual recognition, social display and possibly ontogenetic or sexual differences.

The fossil material of Lambeosaurus lambei includes skulls, jaws and postcranial remains recovered from Dinosaur Provincial Park and related areas of Alberta. The Smithsonian records specimens of Lambeosaurus lambei from the Campanian Late Cretaceous, while recent studies of the internal anatomy of Lambeosaurini include specimens preserving the skull, jaws and partial postcranium, allowing the shape of the crest and its internal cavities to be reconstructed with greater precision. These fossils reveal a large, robust and highly specialised hadrosaurid that was anatomically close to other North American lambeosaurines such as Corythosaurus and Hypacrosaurus.

From a morphometric perspective, Lambeosaurus lambei was a large herbivore. A conservative reconstruction places it at approximately 7–9 metres in body length, with a hip height of around 2–2.5 metres and a mass of several tonnes in adult individuals. Its body was bulky, with a deep torso, long muscular tail, powerful hind limbs and forelimbs capable of supporting its weight during quadrupedal locomotion. Like other hadrosaurids, it would have alternated between bipedal and quadrupedal movement depending on speed, feeding and behaviour, using the tail for balance and the forelimbs for support during slow movement or low browsing.

The skull of Lambeosaurus lambei combined a broad keratinous beak, deep jaws and dental batteries composed of numerous replacement teeth. These adaptations allowed it to crop, grind and process large quantities of vegetation, including leaves, shoots, stems, young conifers, ferns and early angiosperms. Its feeding would have been continuous and efficient, characteristic of a large gregarious herbivore capable of exploiting abundant plant resources in the fluvial and wooded environments of the Campanian. In addition to its possible communicative function, the cranial crest gave the animal an extremely distinctive silhouette and probably played an important role in recognition between individuals, age classes or social groups.

Lambeosaurus lambei inhabited highly diverse ecosystems within the Dinosaur Park Formation, one of the richest dinosaur-bearing units of the Late Cretaceous. In these landscapes, it coexisted with other hadrosaurids, ceratopsids, ankylosaurs, pachycephalosaurs, small theropods, dromaeosaurids and large tyrannosaurids. Its ecological role was that of a large social herbivore, probably forming herds or sizeable aggregations that provided advantages against predators and facilitated visual and acoustic communication. The combination of large body size, efficient locomotion, specialised dentition and potentially gregarious behaviour made Lambeosaurus one of the dominant herbivores of the Campanian ecosystems of Alberta.
