Lokiceratops rangiformis

Lokiceratops rangiformis was a centrosaurine ceratopsid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of North America, known from fossil remains recovered from the Judith River Formation in northern Montana, close to the border between the United States and Canada. Formally described in 2024 by Loewen, Sertich and colleagues, this taxon represents one of the most striking ceratopsids discovered in recent years and provides important evidence for the rapid regional diversification of centrosaurines in Laramidia during the Campanian. Its generic name means “Loki’s horned face”, referring to the Norse god Loki and to the curved shape of its enormous frill horns, while the specific epithet rangiformis refers to their resemblance to the asymmetrical antlers of caribou or reindeer.

Geologically, Lokiceratops rangiformis comes from the lower part of the McClelland Ferry Member of the Judith River Formation in the Kennedy Coulee region of Montana. It lived approximately 78 million years ago during the Campanian, in continental environments characterised by subtropical coastal plains, river systems, wetlands and areas of abundant vegetation. These ecosystems formed part of the western margin of the Western Interior Seaway and supported a diverse fauna of herbivorous and predatory dinosaurs, including hadrosaurids, ceratopsids, ankylosaurs, tyrannosauroids, small theropods, turtles, crocodyliforms and other vertebrates.

The holotype, catalogued as EMK 0012, represents a mature individual preserved by most of the skull together with an associated partial skeleton. The material revealed a unique combination of characters within Centrosaurinae, particularly in its cranial ornamentation. Unlike many classic centrosaurines, Lokiceratops lacked a prominent nasal horn and instead possessed a pair of enormous curved, blade-like horns positioned at the rear of the frill. These structures are among the largest known epiparietal ornaments in horned dinosaurs and give the skull an exceptionally distinctive silhouette. In addition, it possessed an asymmetrical spine or process along the midline of the frill, a feature that contributed to the name rangiformis because of its similarity to unevenly developed caribou antlers.

From a morphometric perspective, Lokiceratops rangiformis was a large ceratopsid. Estimates published by the authors place it at approximately 6.7 metres in body length, with an estimated mass of around 5.5 tonnes, making it one of the largest known centrosaurines. Its body would have been quadrupedal, low and robust, with a broad torso, powerful limbs, a relatively short tail and a proportionally enormous head. Like other ceratopsids, it would have used a keratinous rostral beak to crop vegetation and complex dental batteries to process tough plant material, occupying the ecological role of a large terrestrial herbivore within the Campanian ecosystems of Montana.

The anatomy of Lokiceratops reflects the extraordinary ornamental diversity of centrosaurines. Its frill horns should not be interpreted solely as defensive weapons, but were probably also involved in visual display, species recognition, intraspecific competition and sexual selection. The absence of a well-developed nasal horn, combined with the large blade-like posterior horns, clearly distinguishes it from other contemporary centrosaurines and reinforces the idea that several ceratopsid species could coexist in relatively nearby regions, each possessing highly specialised cranial signals. The original publication interpreted this pattern as evidence of rapid regional radiations and high levels of endemism among Campanian centrosaurines in North America.

Lokiceratops rangiformis inhabited a rich and dynamic North American landscape composed of river plains, wetlands, riparian forests and open areas covered by low and medium-height vegetation. Within this environment, it would have coexisted with other large herbivores such as hadrosaurids and ceratopsids, as well as tyrannosauroid predators. Its large size, robust build and striking cranial ornamentation make it an especially suitable species for illustrating the complexity of Laramidian ecosystems, where horned dinosaurs evolved an extraordinary variety of forms, sizes and visual signals during the Late Cretaceous.
