Maiasaura peeblesorum

Maiasaura peeblesorum was a hadrosaurid ornithopod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of North America, known primarily from fossil remains recovered from the Two Medicine Formation in Montana, United States. It lived during the Campanian, approximately 76–74 million years ago, in the continental ecosystems of western Laramidia, a region rich in herbivorous dinosaurs, theropods, small vertebrates and seasonally influenced fluvial environments. Formally described by Jack Horner and Robert Makela in 1979, this species quickly became one of the most iconic hadrosaurids in palaeontology because of the exceptional information it provides on growth, reproduction, social behaviour and parental care in dinosaurs.

The name Maiasaura means “good mother lizard”, directly referring to fossil evidence from Egg Mountain, a locality in Montana where nests, eggs, embryos, hatchlings, juveniles and adults were discovered in association. This concentration of remains led to the interpretation of Maiasaura peeblesorum as a dinosaur with complex reproductive behaviour, possibly nesting colonially and caring for its young during the earliest stages of development. Although the exact degree of parental care remains a subject of scientific discussion, Maiasaura continues to be one of the most important examples of reproductive behaviour documented in non-avian dinosaurs.

Taxonomically, Maiasaura peeblesorum belongs to Hadrosauridae, the group of dinosaurs commonly known as “duck-billed dinosaurs”. Within this clade, it is classified among the saurolophine hadrosaurids, forms lacking the large hollow cranial crests characteristic of lambeosaurines. It possessed an elongated skull, broad snout, anterior keratinous beak and highly specialised dental batteries for cutting and grinding vegetation. Its anatomy combined a large, robust body with facultative bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion, typical of many Late Cretaceous hadrosaurids.

From a morphometric perspective, Maiasaura peeblesorum was a large herbivore. Adults reached approximately 8–9 metres in body length, with a hip height of around 2–2.5 metres and a mass that may have amounted to several tonnes, depending on age, sex and reconstruction method. Its body was bulky, with a deep torso, long muscular tail for balance, powerful hind limbs and forelimbs capable of supporting body weight during quadrupedal locomotion. This combination allowed efficient movement on both two and four limbs, adapting to different speeds and feeding behaviours.

One of the most characteristic features of Maiasaura peeblesorum was its relatively low, elongated skull, with a small prominence or thickening over the nasal and frontal region but without a developed hollow crest. The broad beak and dental batteries formed by numerous replacement teeth enabled it to process large quantities of vegetation. As a generalist herbivore, it probably consumed leaves, shoots, tender branches, seeds, fruits, young conifers, ferns and early angiosperms available in the Campanian landscapes of Montana. Its masticatory apparatus was adapted for continuous and efficient feeding, characteristic of a large gregarious herbivore.

The life history of Maiasaura peeblesorum is one of the most extensively studied aspects of the species. The abundant record of individuals from different age groups has allowed rapid growth patterns during the first years of life to be reconstructed. Hatchlings were small and vulnerable and emerged from nests excavated or prepared on the ground within repeatedly used nesting areas. The presence of juvenile remains at different developmental stages suggests that these animals grew rapidly until reaching sizes that made them less vulnerable to predators. This fossil record makes Maiasaura a fundamental reference for studying growth biology in herbivorous dinosaurs.

Maiasaura peeblesorum inhabited ecosystems composed of fluvial plains, channels, seasonally influenced soils, open woodland and areas of abundant vegetation. In the Two Medicine Formation, it coexisted with other dinosaurs including ceratopsids, ankylosaurs, small theropods, troodontids, dromaeosaurids and large tyrannosauroids such as Daspletosaurus. Within this ecological context, Maiasaura occupied the role of a large social herbivore, probably forming herds or sizeable aggregations that provided protection from predators and may also have facilitated colonial reproduction.
