Product details
Masiakasaurus knopfleri was a small noasaurid theropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Madagascar, known from remains recovered from the Maevarano Formation in the Mahajanga Basin. Formally described in 2001 by Sampson, Carrano, and Forster, this taxon represents one of the most distinctive theropods in the Gondwanan fossil record, both because of its small size and the extraordinary morphology of its jaws. Its generic name derives from the Malagasy word masiaka, which may be translated as “fierce” or “vicious”, while the specific epithet knopfleri honours the musician Mark Knopfler, whose music accompanied part of the excavation and preparation work on the fossil material.
Taxonomically, Masiakasaurus knopfleri belongs to Noasauridae, a group of small to medium-sized abelisauroid theropods closely related to abelisaurids, but distinguished by a generally lighter and more specialized anatomy. The known material of Masiakasaurus is relatively abundant for a small theropod and includes cranial, mandibular, vertebral, pelvic, and limb elements. Later studies substantially increased the number of available remains, allowing approximately two thirds of its skeleton to be reconstructed, making this species one of the best-known noasaurids.
The most characteristic feature of Masiakasaurus knopfleri is its heterodont and procumbent dentition, especially visible in the anterior part of the jaws. Unlike most theropods, whose teeth are mainly directed downward, the front teeth of Masiakasaurus projected forward, forming a highly unusual dental arrangement. The anterior premaxillary and dentary teeth were elongated, curved, and forward-facing, while the posterior teeth had a more conventional cutting arrangement. This combination suggests a specialized feeding strategy, possibly related to the capture of small, slippery, or fast-moving prey, such as fish, small vertebrates, insects, or other soft-bodied animals.
From a morphometric perspective, Masiakasaurus knopfleri was a small theropod, with an estimated adult length close to 2 metres, an approximate hip height of around 50–60 centimetres, and a body mass probably around 20 kilograms, although these figures should be considered approximate due to the incomplete nature of the fossil material. Its body was bipedal, lightweight, and relatively gracile, with hind limbs longer than the forelimbs, an elongated tail for balance, and a low, anteroposteriorly elongated skull. Histological studies indicate that it was not the juvenile stage of a larger theropod, but a dinosaur that reached maturity at a small body size and showed relatively slow, determinate growth for a theropod dinosaur.
The postcranial anatomy of Masiakasaurus shows a combination of abelisauroid traits and distinctive adaptations. Its vertebrae display features shared with other abelisauroids, while the limb skeleton was relatively lightly built, indicating an active animal capable of agile movement in the continental environments of Madagascar. The forelimbs were shorter than the hind limbs, but not as extremely reduced as in some large abelisaurids, and the overall body plan suggests a small opportunistic predator specialized in exploiting resources different from those used by the large carnivores of its ecosystem.
Masiakasaurus knopfleri inhabited the Maevarano Formation during the Maastrichtian, in a semi-arid environment with seasonal rivers, floodplains, and episodes of marked drought. It shared its ecosystem with dinosaurs such as the large abelisaurid Majungasaurus crenatissimus, the sauropod Rapetosaurus krausei, primitive birds, crocodyliforms, turtles, fish, and mammals. In this context, Masiakasaurus probably occupied the niche of a small predator or specialized mesocarnivore, capturing prey that did not require the cranial power of large theropods, but rather precision, speed, and a highly modified dentition.
This replica represents Masiakasaurus knopfleri as a small Malagasy noasaurid with a lightweight body, low and elongated skull, agile hind limbs, and the characteristic anterior dentition projecting forward. Its reconstruction integrates the available information on its osteology, morphometry, growth, and ecology, highlighting one of the strangest and most recognizable theropods of the Late Cretaceous of Gondwana.

Collector's item ; Hyper-realistic replica, highly detailed and with a high degree of scientific precision.
Made to scale, prototyped in resin and with a scenic base in most of the models offered. If you like miniatures, both for collecting and for painting, we offer you a wide variety of scale replicas; All of them related to dinosaurs, extinct prehistoric fauna and current fauna.
So if you love dinosaurs and animals as much as we do, this is your favorite store to collect and paint them :)
We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.
Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.
Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.
Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.
Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.
All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.
Information about the models
The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.
Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.
Handmade
All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

We are authorized distributors
We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
