Product details
Nanaimoteuthis haggarti is a gigantic extinct cephalopod belonging to the cirrate octopuses (order Cirrata), a lineage related to modern "Dumbo" deep-sea octopuses, although enormously more specialized and colossal in size. It lived during the Late Cretaceous, approximately 86 to 72 million years ago, in North Pacific seas that covered regions of modern-day Japan (Hokkaido) and Canada (Vancouver Island). It was taxonomically redefined in 2026 after a massive revision of fossilized jaws ("beaks"), which reorganized old materials previously attributed to other genera.
Size: possibly the largest octopus in history
The most spectacular—and controversial—aspect of Nanaimoteuthis haggarti is its estimated size.
Biometric reconstructions performed in the study published in Science extrapolated body size from the relationship between the mandibular beak and the body of modern octopuses. Estimates suggest:
- Total length: approximately 6.6–19 meters
- Some individuals may have rivaled or surpassed the modern giant squid (Architeuthis).
- The largest known beak is approximately 1.5 times larger than that of the largest modern giant squids.
However, caution is important: the upper range (~19 m) remains debated, because the animal is only known from fossil jaws and not from complete skeletons or body impressions. Several paleontologists have pointed out that this could be an overestimation derived from extrapolating proportions of current species that may not have been anatomically equivalent.
Inferred Anatomy: a realistic "kraken," not a giant squid
Although its body has not been preserved, comparisons with modern vampyromorphs suggest an animal with:
- Eight long, muscular arms.
- Membranes between the arms (umbrella webbing).
- Dorsal lateral fins, similar to modern cirrate octopuses.
- Relatively soft but voluminous body.
- A huge and extremely robust horny beak.
Unlike a modern giant squid, it probably did not have long capture tentacles; it would be anatomically more similar to a huge hypertrophied deep-sea octopus, with locomotion based on mantle pulses and coordinated arm movements.
Jaw and feeding: a destructive predator
The main fossil material consists of 27 fossilized jaw beaks found in Japan and Canada. The study found something extraordinary: adult jaws show extreme wear, greater than that of any known modern cephalopod.
The following were observed:
- Chipping.
- Microfractures.
- Edges rounded by intensive use.
- Wear of up to 10% of the beak length.
This suggests that N. haggarti consumed relatively resistant prey and not just soft-bodied organisms. This probably included:
- Large bony fish.
- Cephalopods.
- Hard crustaceans.
- Ammonites.
- Large bivalves.
- Possibly juvenile marine vertebrates or bone carrion.
Apex predator of the Cretaceous?
The most revolutionary hypothesis of the study proposes that Nanaimoteuthis haggarti may have been an apex predator, ecologically rivaling:
- Mosasaurus hoffmannii
- plesiosaurs
- large Cretaceous sharks
- other marine reptiles
This challenges the classic view of Mesozoic seas as ecosystems dominated exclusively by giant vertebrates. Some external researchers consider this hypothesis plausible, while others believe it is still premature to assert that it regularly hunted large marine reptiles based solely on fossil jaws.
Intelligence and lateralization
A particularly interesting finding is that the beaks exhibit consistent asymmetrical wear, with one side more eroded than the other.
This could indicate:
- Lateral functional preference ("right-handed" or "left-handed").
- Complex predatory coordination.
- Possible brain lateralization.
This is a trait observed in highly intelligent modern octopuses, although the authors emphasize that intelligence cannot be directly demonstrated from fossils.
Paleoenvironment
Nanaimoteuthis haggarti inhabited relatively open and productive seas, not necessarily deep ocean abysses like many modern cirrate octopuses. It shared an ecosystem with:
- mosasaurs
- plesiosaurs
- Cretaceous sharks
- giant fish
- ammonites
The North Pacific oceans of the Cretaceous were extremely rich ecosystems, with complex food webs where this enormous cephalopod may have occupied an unexpectedly dominant ecological niche.
Approximate diorama measurements:
- 1:35 scale Complete
- Length 237 mm
- Height 176 mm
- Width 179 mm

Collector's item ; Hyper-realistic replica, highly detailed and with a high degree of scientific precision.
Made to scale, prototyped in resin and with a scenic base in most of the models offered. If you like miniatures, both for collecting and for painting, we offer you a wide variety of scale replicas; All of them related to dinosaurs, extinct prehistoric fauna and current fauna.
So if you love dinosaurs and animals as much as we do, this is your favorite store to collect and paint them :)
We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.
Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.
Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.
Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.
Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.
All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.
Information about the models
The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.
Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.
Handmade
All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

We are authorized distributors
We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
