Platalearostrum hoekmani was an extinct odontocete belonging to the family Delphinidae, described in 2010 from a fragmentary rostrum recovered by bottom trawling in the North Sea, approximately 110 km west of Rotterdam. The specimen, housed at the Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam, represents the holotype of the species and is distinguished by an exceptionally short, broad and robust cranial anatomy. Its generic name refers directly to the spatulate shape of the snout.
Because the fossil was recovered outside its original stratigraphic context, its geological age cannot be determined with complete precision. It is generally considered to have lived between the Middle Pliocene and the Early Pleistocene, approximately 3.5 to 1.8 million years ago, although this chronology remains tentative.
The known material consists of part of the left maxilla, the premaxilla and the vomer. The preserved fragment measures 221 mm in length, with a maximum rostral width of 156 mm and a premaxilla reaching up to 117 mm in width. The preserved tooth row is approximately 111 mm long and contains six alveoli, indicating a reduced dentition compared with other long-snouted delphinids.
Its most distinctive feature is the extreme lateral expansion of the premaxilla, which gave the rostrum a short, blunt and spatulate shape. This structure, together with the concave and rugose dorsal surface, suggests the presence of a highly developed melon, possibly comparable to that of modern pilot whales. For this reason, it has been interpreted as a delphinid with globicephaline affinities, although its exact phylogenetic position remains uncertain because the remainder of the skull and the postcranial skeleton are unknown.
The reduced dentition and broad rostrum may have been associated with suction feeding, probably targeting fish and cephalopods. However, this hypothesis is based on comparisons with living delphinids rather than on direct evidence of diet.
Its total body length cannot be calculated with precision, but it is estimated to have reached approximately 4–6 metres. A conservative reconstruction would depict it as a robust cetacean measuring around 4.5–5 metres in length, with a high, bulbous forehead, an extremely short rostrum and a streamlined body broadly comparable to that of large modern delphinids.
Platalearostrum hoekmani is one of the most unusual fossil cetaceans known from the North Sea. Its distinctive rostral morphology reflects an extreme specialisation, possibly related to echolocation and suction feeding, and makes this species a notable example of the evolutionary diversity of Plio-Pleistocene delphinids.

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.
Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.
Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.
Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.
Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.
All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.

All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.
