Saurosuchus - Hyperodapedon

This composition represents a scene inspired by the continental ecosystems of the Late Triassic of South America, featuring Saurosuchus galilei, one of the great archosaurian predators of the Ischigualasto Formation, and Hyperodapedon sanjuanensis, a herbivorous rhynchosaur abundant in the same Argentine Triassic faunas. Unlike other palaeoartistic combinations involving species from different continents or time intervals, this association is palaeobiologically plausible within the general framework of Ischigualasto, a Carnian-aged geological unit in San Juan Province, Argentina, renowned for documenting one of the most important terrestrial communities of the Triassic.

Saurosuchus galilei was a large non-crocodylomorph loricatan, traditionally included among the so-called “rauisuchians”, and one of the principal terrestrial predators of its ecosystem. Its anatomy corresponds to that of a large quadrupedal archosaur with a tall and robust skull, powerful jaws, a strong neck, an elongated trunk, solid limbs and a long tail that contributed to body balance. Unlike modern crocodiles, Saurosuchus was not primarily an aquatic animal, but rather a large terrestrial predator, representative of a radiation of carnivorous archosaurs that dominated many ecosystems before the full rise of theropod dinosaurs. Osteological studies of its skull and recent reviews of its palaeobiology place it as an apex predator capable of attacking large Triassic vertebrates, including dicynodonts, cynodonts, aetosaurs and rhynchosaurs.

From a morphometric perspective, Saurosuchus galilei may have reached approximately 6–7 metres in length in the largest individuals, with a massive and powerful silhouette. Its skull displayed a clearly predatory architecture, with large fenestrae, a strong rostral region and ziphodont teeth, laterally compressed and serrated, suitable for slicing flesh. This combination of size, jaw strength and specialised dentition makes it one of the great terrestrial carnivores of the South American Carnian, comparable in ecological role to the largest predators of its time.

Hyperodapedon sanjuanensis, by contrast, was a herbivorous hyperodapedontine rhynchosaur also known from the Ischigualasto Formation. Rhynchosaurs were non-dinosaurian archosauromorphs with compact bodies, broad skulls and highly specialised jaws adapted for processing vegetation. In Ischigualasto, remains of Hyperodapedon sanjuanensis are particularly abundant, and some studies indicate that rhynchosaurs represent a significant proportion of the specimens recovered from this unit, suggesting that they were dominant herbivores within the community. Recent studies of the holotype skull have refined its anatomy and confirmed its position as one of the best-documented South American rhynchosaurs.

The anatomy of Hyperodapedon sanjuanensis reflects a highly specialised feeding adaptation. It possessed a broad, triangular skull, a strong anterior beak and complex maxillary and mandibular dental plates with multiple tooth rows forming cutting and grinding surfaces. This system allowed it to process tough or fibrous vegetation by means of a specialised jaw mechanism, distinct from that of later herbivorous dinosaurs. From a morphometric point of view, Hyperodapedon was much smaller than Saurosuchus, with an approximate body length of around 1–1.5 metres depending on the individual, a low and robust body, short but sturdy limbs, and a terrestrial posture adapted to movement in continental environments.

The environment shared by both animals consisted of fluvial landscapes and floodplains of the Late Triassic, with marked seasonality and a fauna dominated by archosaurs, rhynchosaurs, cynodonts, dicynodonts and the earliest dinosaurs. In this setting, Saurosuchus would have occupied the top of the food chain as a large predator, while Hyperodapedon represented one of the most abundant and ecologically important herbivorous prey animals. For this reason, a scene in which Saurosuchus interacts with Hyperodapedon is reasonable as a general palaeoecological interpretation, even though there is no direct fossil evidence of a specific predatory event between the two taxa.

This replica represents a Triassic scene of strong visual and educational value: the contrast between a large loricatan predator with a powerful skull and slicing dentition, and a compact herbivorous rhynchosaur with specialised jaws and a robust body. The composition integrates the available information on the osteology, morphometry and ecology of Saurosuchus galilei and Hyperodapedon sanjuanensis, presenting a representative moment from the ecosystems of Ischigualasto, when dinosaurs still shared the world with now entirely extinct lineages of archosauromorph reptiles.
