Semirostrum ceruttii

Semirostrum ceruttii was a fossil odontocete belonging to Phocoenidae, the porpoise family, known from marine Pliocene deposits in California, United States. Formally described by Racicot and colleagues in 2014, this taxon represents one of the most extraordinary forms in porpoise evolution because of its extremely elongated lower jaw, which projected far beyond the upper rostrum. Its generic name may be interpreted as “half rostrum” or “half beak”, referring to the marked difference in length between the upper and lower jaws, while the specific epithet ceruttii honours Richard Cerutti, a palaeontologist associated with the discovery and study of the fossil material.

Geologically, Semirostrum ceruttii is known from Pliocene marine deposits of the San Diego Formation and the Purisima Formation in California. The original publication placed the material within an approximate interval of 5 to 1.6 million years ago, corresponding to coastal ecosystems of the Late Pliocene and the transition into the Early Pleistocene. These environments included shallow seas, bays, estuaries and highly productive coastal zones inhabited by cetaceans, pinnipeds, fishes, sharks, seabirds and benthic invertebrates.

The most distinctive feature of Semirostrum ceruttii was its fused and exceptionally elongated mandibular symphysis, a rigid extension of the lower jaw that reached approximately 85 centimetres in length in the best-preserved specimen. This structure has no direct equivalent among living porpoises, whose mandibular symphyses are very short, and represents an extreme case of lower-jaw prognathism among odontocetes. The mandible projected far beyond the skull and upper rostrum, producing an unmistakable lateral profile with a long, narrow and highly specialised bony “chin”.

From a general morphometric perspective, Semirostrum ceruttii was a medium-sized porpoise, probably broadly comparable in body size to some living phocoenids, although with a far more specialised head and jaw. Its total body length may be conservatively estimated at approximately 2–3 metres, depending on the individual and the reconstruction used. However, the most relevant and diagnostic measurement is the length of the mandibular symphysis. Its body would have been hydrodynamic, with pectoral flippers, a propulsive tail fluke and a form adapted for active swimming in coastal waters, as in other phocoenids.

The function of the elongated mandible has been interpreted as a unique feeding adaptation. Studies describe numerous small conical teeth located behind the symphysis, together with oblique wear facets on the labial surfaces of the lower teeth, suggesting repeated contact with the benthic substrate. In addition, the presence of numerous canals and foramina associated with the symphysis indicates a high degree of innervation, suggesting that this structure may have functioned as a sensitive tactile organ used to explore soft sediments in search of prey.

In life, Semirostrum probably foraged in shallow waters, estuaries or muddy coastal environments, detecting and capturing small fishes, crustaceans, molluscs and other benthic organisms through a strategy involving probing and sweeping the seafloor.

Semirostrum ceruttii demonstrates that fossil porpoises occupied a much wider range of ecological niches than those seen in living species. Whereas modern porpoises are generally short-snouted coastal odontocetes that actively pursue fishes and cephalopods, Semirostrum developed an extreme mandibular anatomy functionally comparable to a specialised tool for benthic exploration.

This adaptation makes it a key species for understanding the morphological and ecological diversity of Phocoenidae during the Pliocene, as well as the evolutionary experimentation of odontocetes in coastal environments.
