These figures should be interpreted as ecological estimates rather than direct evidence that it regularly attacked the largest adult megaherbivores.

Isotopic analyses and recent studies of trophic ecology show that Smilodon had a flexible diet within its broader specialisation as a predator of large mammals, with regional variation linked to prey availability and the different ecosystems of the Americas. Palaeoclimatic models also indicate that S. populator occupied a relatively broad climatic niche, consistent with its wide distribution across much of the South American continent.
