Product description and measurements

Smilodon populator, the largest and most robust known representative of the genus Smilodon, was one of the most impressive predators of South America’s Pleistocene megafauna.

This replica was developed exclusively for Dinosauria Creatures through an extensive process of scientific research, anatomical documentation and the compilation of data from specialised palaeontological publications. Every aspect of the piece has been designed to convey the powerful build of this machairodont felid: a compact and exceptionally muscular body, strong forelimbs, a robust neck, an elongated and narrow skull, and the characteristic hypertrophied upper canines that define its unmistakable anatomy.

Smilodon populator inhabited extensive regions of South America during the Pleistocene and reached dimensions greater than those of most living large felids. Commonly accepted estimates place many individuals at approximately 220–360 kg, although exceptionally large specimens may have exceeded 400 kg. One of the largest known skulls, recovered from Uruguay, has a total length of approximately 392 mm and, together with other fossil material, was used to document the model featured in this diorama.

Its skeleton reveals a functional specialisation very different from that observed in large cursorial cats. Its body proportions, the power of its forelimbs and the musculature associated with the neck and shoulder girdle suggest a hunting strategy based on short-range approaches, the physical restraint of large prey and the precise application of the bite. Recent biomechanical studies of sabre-toothed felids support the interpretation that the cranio-mandibular apparatus formed part of a highly specialised system in which skull geometry, jaw opening and canine action worked together during prey capture.

Palaeobiological evidence indicates that it fed on large Pleistocene herbivores, including equids, camelids, toxodonts, large armadillos, glyptodonts and ground sloths. Medium-sized individuals are thought to have commonly targeted prey weighing several hundred kilograms, while the largest specimens may occasionally have confronted animals weighing well over one tonne. These figures should be interpreted as ecological estimates rather than direct evidence that it regularly attacked the largest adult megaherbivores.

Isotopic analyses and recent studies of trophic ecology show that Smilodon had a flexible diet within its broader specialisation as a predator of large mammals, with regional variation linked to prey availability and the different ecosystems of the Americas. Palaeoclimatic models also indicate that S. populator occupied a relatively broad climatic niche, consistent with its wide distribution across much of the South American continent.

A Replica Created for Discerning Collectors

This piece forms part of an exclusive Dinosauria Creatures collection dedicated solely to museum-quality replicas, created for specialised collectors, private display and integration into educational, cultural or museum environments.

This is not a generic reproduction. The model is the result of a specific development process involving:

  • review of fossil material and specialised palaeontological literature;
  • study of cranial and postcranial morphometrics;
  • anatomical comparison with other machairodontines and living large felids;
  • functional interpretation of the musculature and body proportions;
  • adaptation of the model to the visual and technical standards expected of an exhibition-quality piece.

This exclusive Dinosauria Creatures replica is available only through this website and is sold exclusively with our professional hand-painting service included. Each piece is individually finished by specialised artists, who carefully apply colours, textures, shadows and subtle tonal variations to enhance the anatomical detail and provide a truly exhibition-quality presentation. This reinforces its limited and distinctive character within the specialised palaeontological collectors’ market.

Information about aftershocks

Collector's item ; Hyper-realistic replica, highly detailed and with a high degree of scientific precision.

Made to scale, prototyped in resin and with a scenic base in most of the models offered. If you like miniatures, both for collecting and for painting, we offer you a wide variety of scale replicas; All of them related to dinosaurs, extinct prehistoric fauna and current fauna.

So if you love dinosaurs and animals as much as we do, this is your favorite store to collect and paint them :)

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.

Information about the models

The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.

Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.

Handmade

All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

We are authorized distributors

We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
