Product description and measurements

Teratophoneus curriei was a tyrannosaurid theropod dinosaur belonging to the subfamily Tyrannosaurinae, a large and robust predator that inhabited North America during the Late Cretaceous, specifically in the late Campanian, approximately 76.5–75.5 million years ago, in what is now southern Utah, United States. Its name literally means “monster murderer”, derived from the Greek teras (“monster”) and phoneus (“murderer”), while the epithet curriei honors Canadian paleontologist Philip J. Currie. It was formally described in 2011 by Thomas Carr and colleagues.

Dimensions and proportions

Although related to later giants such as Tyrannosaurus rex or Tarbosaurus bataar, Teratophoneus was somewhat smaller and anatomically more compact. Known specimens suggest:

  • Adult length: approximately 7.5–8.7 meters
  • Estimated weight: between 1–2.5 tons
  • Hip height: ~2–2.5 meters

The first remains corresponded to a subadult individual, initially estimated at about 6 meters, but later findings showed that adults reached considerably larger sizes.

Anatomy: a short-snouted, powerful tyrannosaur

One of the most distinctive features of Teratophoneus was its proportionately short and deep skull, unlike the more elongated snout of forms like Albertosaurus. Compared to other tyrannosaurids, it had a compressed snout and a robust facial region, probably optimized to generate an extremely powerful bite over short distances. This gave it a particularly massive and compact cranial profile.

Its body anatomy was typical of a large tyrannosaurid:

  • Large, muscular head.
  • Thick, S-shaped neck.
  • Extremely reduced arms with two functional fingers.
  • Long, muscular hind limbs adapted for relatively fast locomotion.
  • Rigid, heavy tail used as a dynamic counterbalance.

Although it did not reach the massive bulk of T. rex, it was a predator clearly specialized in strength and power.

Dentition and predatory strategy

Like other tyrannosaurids, it possessed teeth:

  • Very thick.
  • Strongly serrated.
  • Designed more for crushing and tearing flesh than for clean cutting.

Its bite was probably adapted to partially fracture bones and exert enormous pressure on large prey. More than an extremely fast hunter, Teratophoneus must have behaved as a powerful ambush predator, using short accelerations and violent attacks against large herbivores.

Possible social behavior

One of the most interesting aspects of Teratophoneus is the evidence of possible gregarious or social behavior. A site in Utah was discovered with remains of 4–5 individuals of different ages apparently killed in the same event. This finding suggests that, at least occasionally, Teratophoneus may have moved or fed in groups, something also proposed for other tyrannosaurids like Albertosaurus and Daspletosaurus. However, it remains a debated topic.

Paleoenvironment

It lived in the Kaiparowits Formation, an ecosystem very different from the arid modern-day Utah. During the Campanian, this region was part of Laramidia, a large continental island separated by the Western Interior Seaway. The environment consisted of:

  • Humid riverine plains.
  • Peat swamps.
  • Dense riparian forests.
  • Lakes and large channel systems.

The climate was warm, humid, and highly productive, supporting enormous biodiversity of dinosaurs.

Associated fauna and potential prey

Teratophoneus shared its ecosystem with some of the most spectacular dinosaurs of the North American Campanian, including:

  • Kosmoceratops richardsoni
  • Utahceratops gettyi
  • Gryposaurus monumentensis
  • Parasaurolophus cyrtocristatus
  • Talos sampsoni
  • Hagryphus giganteus

Its main prey likely included juvenile hadrosaurs and medium-sized or weakened ceratopsians.

Evolutionary importance

Teratophoneus curriei is particularly important because it represents an early stage in the evolution of large western North American tyrannosaurinae. Phylogenetically, it appears close to forms such as Lythronax and Dynamoterror, positioning itself evolutionarily between more primitive tyrannosaurids like Daspletosaurus and later giants like Tyrannosaurus rex. Its anatomy suggests that many iconic traits of T. rex —a deep skull, powerful bite, and robust build— were already evolving millions of years earlier.

Approximate measurements of Teratophoneus:

  • Complete 1:35 Scale
    • Length 208 mm
    • Height 79 mm
    • Width 40 mm
    • Snout-to-tail length 229 mm
Information about aftershocks

Collector's item ; Hyper-realistic replica, highly detailed and with a high degree of scientific precision.

Made to scale, prototyped in resin and with a scenic base in most of the models offered. If you like miniatures, both for collecting and for painting, we offer you a wide variety of scale replicas; All of them related to dinosaurs, extinct prehistoric fauna and current fauna.

So if you love dinosaurs and animals as much as we do, this is your favorite store to collect and paint them :)

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.

Information about the models

The poses of the models aim to represent each character in the most scientifically viable way, thus revealing the life and customs of prehistoric and modern fauna.

Each character has its own personality and develops in different life scenarios; birth, adolescence and play, hunting, feeding, fighting, courtship, death and many other scenes from their daily life, always from the creative perspective of their designers.

Handmade

All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.

We are authorized distributors

We offer both our own physical replicas and those that have been modeled by many of the best 3D designers, in order to offer you the greatest possible variety.
