This model represents a hatchling or early juvenile specimen of Triceratops, one of the most iconic ceratopsid dinosaurs of the Late Cretaceous of North America. Triceratops inhabited the terminal ecosystems of Laramidia during the latest Maastrichtian, approximately 68–66 million years ago, particularly in formations such as Hell Creek, Lance, Scollard, Laramie, and equivalent units across western North America. Although adult Triceratops are renowned for their enormous skulls, three horns and large bony frills, juvenile individuals displayed markedly different proportions and anatomical features that are essential for understanding the growth and development of these large horned herbivores.

Taxonomically, Triceratops belongs to Ceratopsidae, within Chasmosaurinae, the group of ceratopsids generally characterised by elongated frills and well-developed supraorbital horns. The traditionally recognised species are Triceratops horridus and Triceratops prorsus, both known from the latest Cretaceous of North America. In a juvenile reconstruction, identification to species level should be approached cautiously unless the model is based on a specific fossil specimen, as many diagnostic adult characteristics changed substantially during growth. A “Triceratops calf” should therefore be understood as a juvenile ontogenetic representation of the genus Triceratops, rather than necessarily representing a particular species unless based on specific fossil material.

From a morphometric perspective, a Triceratops calf would have been considerably smaller and lighter than adults, which could reach approximately 8–9 metres in length and weigh several tonnes. Early juveniles would have possessed a proportionally more compact body, relatively long limbs for their size, a large head in relation to the body and a frill that was still developing. Depending on the age represented, a very young Triceratops could be reconstructed at less than 1 metre in length, while more advanced juveniles could already have reached several metres. Its overall appearance would have been that of a young quadrupedal herbivore: robust yet still relatively gracile, with a less heavy and massive silhouette than a fully grown adult.

One of the most important aspects when reconstructing a juvenile Triceratops is cranial ontogeny. In young individuals, the supraorbital horns were shorter, proportionally more slender and differently orientated than those of adults. During growth, these horns underwent changes in shape, size and curvature, passing through developmental stages in which they could project more vertically or display different orientations before acquiring the adult configuration. The nasal horn would likewise have been poorly developed, while the frill was shorter, less expanded and possessed comparatively simpler margins. These differences mean that a Triceratops calf should not simply be represented as a miniature adult, but as an animal with its own distinctive juvenile proportions.

The skull of a Triceratops calf would have combined a small but functional keratinous beak, jaws adapted for herbivory and developing dental batteries. Although adults were highly specialised for processing tough vegetation using a powerful masticatory apparatus, juveniles probably consumed softer and more accessible plants, including shoots, low-growing leaves, ferns, herbaceous angiosperms and young vegetation from fluvial and wooded environments. As the animals matured, the skull, jaw musculature and dentition would have progressively strengthened, allowing them to exploit tougher and more varied plant resources.

In terms of body proportions, a Triceratops calf would have possessed a robust torso, strong forelimbs and hind limbs, hands and feet adapted to maintaining a stable quadrupedal stance, and a relatively short tail compared with many other herbivorous dinosaurs. The head would have been large relative to the body, but without the extreme mass of the adult skull. This combination of juvenile proportions would have produced a more compact, lower and more active silhouette, possibly allowing greater agility than in fully grown adults, while retaining the characteristic quadrupedal locomotor pattern of ceratopsids.

Ecologically, juvenile Triceratops inhabited the same environments as adults: floodplains, riparian forests, river channels, wetlands and open areas of latest Maastrichtian North America. These ecosystems were shared with dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Edmontosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus and Thescelosaurus, as well as numerous smaller vertebrates. Hatchlings and juveniles would have been considerably more vulnerable to predators than adults, making it plausible that they relied on protection from larger individuals, family groups or some degree of social behaviour. However, the precise extent of parental care in Triceratops cannot currently be established with the same confidence as in dinosaurs for which direct nesting evidence is available.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.
