Triceratops horridus was a large chasmosaurine ceratopsian dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of North America, known primarily from fossil remains recovered from the Hell Creek Formation and equivalent units such as the Lance, Laramie, Denver and Frenchman formations. It lived during the latest Maastrichtian, in the final few million years before the Cretaceous–Palaeogene extinction event, and represents one of the most iconic species of the terrestrial ecosystems of Laramidia. Originally described by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1889, Triceratops horridus belongs to Ceratopsidae, the group of large herbivorous dinosaurs characterised by a rostral beak, dental batteries, a cranial frill and well-developed horns.

Within the genus Triceratops, T. horridus is distinguished from T. prorsus by a combination of cranial features and stratigraphic distribution. Morphometric and cladistic studies have historically reduced many proposed Triceratops species to two principal forms, T. horridus and T. prorsus, differentiated by facial proportions, the development of the supraorbital horns and other cranial details. In the Hell Creek Formation, T. horridus is particularly associated with lower and middle stratigraphic levels, whereas T. prorsus is more common in the upper levels. This pattern has been interpreted as a possible evolutionary transition within the Triceratops lineage near the end of the Cretaceous.

From a morphometric perspective, Triceratops horridus was a very large ceratopsid, with adult individuals reaching approximately 8–9 metres in body length, a hip height of around 2.5–3 metres and an estimated mass generally between 6 and 10 tonnes, depending on the specimen and the method used. Its body was quadrupedal, low, broad and extremely robust, with powerful limbs adapted to support a substantial body mass.

The head was one of the animal’s most impressive structures. In large adults, the skull could exceed 2 metres in length and featured an anterior keratinous beak, deep jaws and dental batteries specialised for cutting and processing tough vegetation.

The most recognisable feature of Triceratops horridus was its three-horned skull: two large supraorbital horns above the eyes and a shorter nasal horn positioned over the snout. In T. horridus, the brow horns tended to be relatively long and prominent, particularly when compared with some forms of T. prorsus.

The cranial frill was solid, short and broad, without the large parietal fenestrae seen in many other ceratopsids. Its margin was bordered by epiossifications that changed in shape during growth. The skull surface showed extensive vascularisation and bone remodelling, indicating that these structures were not merely passive defensive features, but living anatomical elements that may have been involved in display, individual recognition, intraspecific competition and defence against large predators.

Studies of Triceratops cranial morphology have particularly emphasised the massive, vascularised and strongly reinforced frill as one of the genus’s most important anatomical features.

The diet of Triceratops horridus was based on terrestrial vegetation. Its rostral beak would have been used to crop branches, leaves, shoots and resistant plant material, while the dental batteries processed food through a system of continuous tooth replacement.

Unlike herbivores with more lightly constructed skulls, Triceratops combined an enormous head with powerful jaw musculature and a neck capable of supporting considerable loads. This anatomy suggests an animal specialised in exploiting low- and medium-height vegetation, probably including angiosperms, ferns, cycads, young conifers and other plants available on the floodplains of Maastrichtian North America.

Triceratops horridus inhabited rich and dynamic continental ecosystems composed of floodplains, river channels, riparian woodlands and seasonally wet environments. It shared its habitat with dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Edmontosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Thescelosaurus and numerous small theropods, as well as crocodyliforms, turtles, fishes, amphibians, mammals and early birds.

Within this ecosystem, Triceratops was one of the dominant large herbivores and one of the most abundant components of the Hell Creek fauna. Its exceptionally rich fossil record includes skulls from different ontogenetic stages and numerous postcranial remains.

We are authorized distributors of all the replicas and figures we offer. We use 3D printers with 8K - 14K resolution, and high-quality resins with additives to improve hardness and flexibility, thus offering replicas of impeccable quality.

Different scales will be used to make the replicas (depending on the size of the species), although we are open to making other suggested scales upon request as long as they fit in our printing trays, for which you will have to contact us via email and request the required size.

Replicas are supplied with the option of airbrush priming in dark grey. If you require another colour, please let us know which one you prefer in the box with special instructions for the seller. Without priming, we do not guarantee that the resin will accept paint.
We also offer the option of choosing a professionally painted replica, which is agreed upon throughout its development with the painter, through a private chat available.

Complete replica (one piece): We supply complete replicas in those models that are small, and models that are medium, large or not very bulky, will have the prerogative of being presented as a complete replica or assembly kit as the case may be.
Complete replicas will be supplied separately from their base.

Replica assembly kit: We supply replicas whose models are large, very large or bulky, only with this option.
The indicated replicas (generally composed of base, head, body and tail) will come prepared for the subsequent assembly that will be required by the client, by sanding, putty, adhesive or technique chosen by the client.

All replicas are thoroughly inspected before shipping and will be carefully packaged to prevent damage during transport.

All orders are individually prepared on the cutter for subsequent prototyping, obtaining a resin part that will require post-processing by manual and ultrasonic cleaning, support removal, ultraviolet curing, labeling and packaging.
