Anzu wyliei

Anzu wyliei was an oviraptorosaurian theropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of North America, known primarily from fossil remains recovered from the Hell Creek Formation in North Dakota and South Dakota, United States. It lived during the latest Maastrichtian, approximately 68–66 million years ago, shortly before the Cretaceous–Palaeogene extinction event. Formally described in 2014, Anzu represents one of the largest known oviraptorosaurs from North America and the best-documented member of Caenagnathidae from this region. Its generic name refers to Anzu, a winged creature from Mesopotamian mythology, alluding to its unusual and probably feathered appearance.

Taxonomically, Anzu wyliei belongs to Oviraptorosauria, a group of maniraptoran theropods closely related to birds. Within this clade, it is classified in Caenagnathidae, a family characterised by relatively lightweight skulls, specialised jaws and bipedal bodies with well-developed forelimbs. Unlike the more compact Asian oviraptorids, Anzu had more elongated and gracile proportions, although it retained a robust body and an anatomy probably adapted to an omnivorous diet.

From a morphometric perspective, Anzu wyliei was a medium-sized theropod. Adults reached approximately 3–3.5 metres in body length, with a hip height of around 1.5 metres and an estimated mass of approximately 200–300 kilograms. Its body was bipedal, with long and powerful hind limbs, a relatively short tail and well-developed arms ending in hands with three functional fingers. These proportions indicate an active and relatively agile animal, although more robustly built than smaller cursorial maniraptorans.

The skull of Anzu wyliei was one of its most distinctive features. It possessed a toothless keratinous beak, a deep lower jaw and a high, rounded bony crest on the top of the skull. This crest probably played a role in visual display, individual recognition or sexual selection, comparable to other ornamental structures seen in oviraptorosaurs. The absence of teeth and the morphology of the jaws indicate a specialised feeding system capable of cutting, crushing or manipulating different types of food without the need for dentition.

The diet of Anzu wyliei was probably omnivorous. The combination of a toothless beak, robust jaws, functional forelimbs and intermediate body size suggests that it could exploit a wide variety of resources, including vegetation, fruits, seeds, small vertebrates, eggs, insects and other invertebrates. This dietary flexibility would have been particularly advantageous in the seasonal ecosystems of Hell Creek, where resource availability could vary throughout the year.

As a member of Maniraptora, Anzu wyliei would have possessed an extensive feather covering. Although no direct feather impressions are preserved with known Anzu material, its evolutionary position within Oviraptorosauria makes a feathered body covering, together with more developed feather structures on the arms and tail, highly plausible. A scientifically cautious reconstruction should therefore depict the animal as feathered, avoiding a completely naked reptilian appearance that would be inconsistent with the available phylogenetic evidence.

The forelimbs were well developed and retained functional three-fingered hands. They may have been used for manipulating food, defence, digging, pulling branches closer or participating in display behaviour. The hind limbs were relatively long and adapted for terrestrial locomotion, while the pelvis and trunk musculature provided stability to an animal combining agility with a solid body build.

Anzu wyliei inhabited the ecosystems of the Hell Creek Formation, characterised by large river systems, floodplains, riparian forests and open areas at the end of the Cretaceous. In these environments, it coexisted with dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Edmontosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus and numerous small theropods. Within this community, Anzu occupied a different niche from the large predators and herbivores, probably acting as an opportunistic omnivore capable of exploiting a broad range of resources.

The palaeobiological importance of Anzu wyliei also lies in the fact that its remains allowed a much more detailed reconstruction of the anatomy of North American caenagnathids. Before its description, many members of this group were known only from jaws or fragmentary postcranial remains. Anzu provided a far more complete skeleton, allowing the body morphology, proportions and evolutionary relationships of these Late Cretaceous oviraptorosaurs to be defined more clearly.
