Ursus spelaeus

Ursus spelaeus, commonly known as the cave bear, was a large ursid from the European Pleistocene and one of the most emblematic species of Quaternary megafauna. It inhabited extensive regions of Europe during the Middle and Late Pleistocene, particularly temperate, cold and mountainous environments associated with open woodlands, grasslands, valleys and karst systems. Its specific name, spelaeus, refers directly to caves, as its remains are frequently found in European caverns that were used as shelters, hibernation sites and places of natural death over many generations.

Although closely related to modern brown bears, Ursus spelaeus possessed a distinctive and easily recognisable anatomy. Its body was large, robust and powerful, with strong limbs, a broad rib cage and a particularly well-developed forequarters. From a morphometric perspective, adult males may have reached approximate body lengths of 2.5–3 metres and masses exceeding 400–600 kilograms in large individuals. The species displayed pronounced sexual dimorphism, with females being considerably smaller. As in other bears, these estimates varied according to age, sex, population and environmental conditions.

The skull of Ursus spelaeus is one of its most characteristic anatomical features. It was tall and massive, with a strongly domed forehead, more elevated than that of many modern brown bears, and a relatively short, powerful snout. The jaws were robust, while the dentition featured broad molars, extensive grinding surfaces and a relative reduction of the anterior premolars, traits consistent with a diet largely dominated by plant material.

Contrary to the popular image of a large cave-dwelling predator, numerous studies based on dental morphology, tooth wear and stable isotope analysis indicate that many cave bear populations were primarily herbivorous. Their diet likely included plants, roots, tubers, fruits and other vegetable resources available before hibernation. However, evidence of omnivory has also been identified in certain populations, suggesting that their diet varied according to region, period and local resource availability.

The life cycle of Ursus spelaeus was closely linked to the use of caves. Thousands of remains recovered from European caverns show that these bears repeatedly used such environments for hibernation, giving birth and shelter during the harshest months of the year. Many individuals died during hibernation, particularly juveniles, elderly animals or weakened specimens, which explains the massive accumulations of skeletons found at certain fossil sites.

This close association with caves also favoured the exceptional preservation of their bones, skulls and jaws, making Ursus spelaeus one of the best-represented fossil mammals of the European Pleistocene.

Ursus spelaeus coexisted with other large Ice Age animals, including mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, steppe bison, horses, giant deer, cave hyenas, cave lions, wolves and Palaeolithic human groups. Its extinction occurred towards the end of the Pleistocene, before the final disappearance of many other European megafaunal species.

Its decline was probably caused by a combination of climatic change, habitat transformation, competition for shelter and direct or indirect human pressure. Its ecological specialisation and dependence on particular environmental conditions may have made the species especially vulnerable during periods of climatic instability towards the end of the last glaciation.
