Varanus priscus

Varanus priscus, traditionally known as Megalania, was the largest known terrestrial lizard and one of the most formidable predators of Australia’s Pleistocene megafauna. Although the name Megalania prisca was used for many years, modern taxonomic revisions generally place the species within the genus Varanus, the same group that includes living monitor lizards such as the Komodo dragon and the Australian perentie. The specific name priscus refers to its ancient nature, while the popular name Megalania remains widely used for this gigantic extinct varanid.

Geologically, Varanus priscus lived during the Pleistocene of Australia, a period characterised by major climatic changes, the expansion of open environments and the presence of a highly diverse megafauna. Its fossils have been recovered from several regions of the Australian continent, particularly central and eastern Australia, with records extending as far south as the Naracoorte Caves in South Australia. This distribution indicates that it was not restricted exclusively to tropical areas, but was capable of inhabiting a range of environments, including open woodland, scrubland, savannah, plains and semi-arid landscapes.

From a morphometric perspective, Varanus priscus was an exceptionally large monitor lizard, although its exact dimensions remain debated because no complete skeletons or fully preserved skulls associated with complete postcranial material are known. The most conservative modern estimates generally place its maximum length at approximately 5–5.5 metres, with body masses that may have reached around 500–600 kilograms in the largest individuals. Higher historical estimates of 7 metres or more rely on less certain extrapolations. A rigorous reconstruction should therefore portray it as an enormous animal while avoiding exaggerations unsupported by the available fossil evidence.

Anatomically, Varanus priscus would have displayed the typical body plan of a large monitor lizard: an elongated and muscular trunk, powerful neck, robust limbs, a long and heavy tail, and a skull adapted for predation. Cranial and mandibular remains indicate strong jaws with recurved, laterally compressed and cutting teeth, well suited for gripping, tearing and removing flesh. Some cranial material shows an unusual rostral crest, a feature that occurs in a less pronounced form in certain living Australian monitor lizards. However, knowledge of the skull remains incomplete, and its reconstruction should therefore be approached cautiously.

Like other monitor lizards, Varanus priscus was probably an active and opportunistic predator capable of locating prey through a combination of vision, chemical sensing and exploratory behaviour. Its diet likely included large marsupials, terrestrial birds, reptiles, carrion and other vertebrates belonging to the Australian megafauna. Comparisons with the Komodo dragon suggest that it may have used a hunting strategy involving powerful bites, tissue damage and the pursuit of wounded prey, although it should not be reconstructed simply as a giant version of a Komodo dragon. Studies of living and fossil monitor lizards have also suggested that venom may have played an important role in the predatory biology of Varanus priscus, although the exact extent of this function in the extinct species remains uncertain.

Varanus priscus shared Pleistocene Australian ecosystems with an extraordinary fauna that included large diprotodontids, giant kangaroos, oversized wombats, terrestrial birds, turtles, snakes, crocodilians in northern regions and other predators such as Thylacoleo carnifex. Within these communities, it probably occupied one of the highest levels of the terrestrial food web as a major macropredator and dominant scavenger. Its disappearance forms part of the wider extinction crisis of Australia’s Pleistocene megafauna and was probably related to a combination of climatic change, habitat transformation, altered fire regimes and direct or indirect human pressure.
